Bantwal: Timber Smugglers Assault Police Constables

Bantwal, Jan 21: A gang of timber smugglers assaulted two police constables who are part of a special team formed by Puttur additional superintendent of police, who tried to stop a vehicle involved with the smuggling of timber to Kerala. The incident occurred at Medu in Salethur village on Monday January 19.

Injured constable Narendra has been admitted for treatment into Vittal Community hospital. After they received information that timber was being smuggled from Kodapadav to Kerala, constables Narendra and Bhaskar laid in wait for the timber truck at Kadumath near Salethur. Reportedly, when the truck loaded with timber moved ahead towards Salethur, the constables chased it in a motor bike. The truck driver abandoned the truck at Medu and fled from the spot.

The constables then contacted the Puttur additional superintendent of police and Vittal police station, explained about the incident and proceeded to take the truck into their possession. A gang of about 25 persons then beat up the constables and took away the truck. A case was registered at Vittal police station about the incident. The police have launched a hunt for nabbing the culprits and the vehicle in question.

Puttur additional superintendent of police, who was busy with arranging security at the Vittal festival, has given 24 hours time for the policemen to arrest the assaulters.
