Bangalore, Dec 29: The Election Commission (EC) on Sunday December 28 served a notice on ex-chief minister and state JD (S) president H D Kumaraswami for entering Madhugiri constituency in contravention of the EC directives.

The Commission first informed the Tumkur district deputy commissioner of the incident and caused issuance of the notice to Kumaraswami through the returning officer of the constituency. Kumaraswami has been asked to furnish his reply immediately and the Election Commission will initiate further steps based on what he has to say, sources said.

The Commission had specifically barred the non-voters and political leaders from remaining in the constituencies to which by-election was held on Saturday December 27, after the campaigning ended at 5 pm on December 25, as it would have helped them to influence the voters. However, Kumaraswami accompanied by his close associate and ex-minister Jamir Ahmed, transgressed the order and visited Madhugiri constituency on Saturday.
