Mangalore: City to Host National ‘A’ Chess Championship from Dec 17

Mangalore, Dec 10: The South Kanara District Chess Association (SKDCA) will organize the 46th National ‘A’ Chess Championship-2008 at Karnataka Bank Auditorium in Kodialbail from Wednesday December 17 to Tuesday December 30. 

The event will be inaugurated at 11 am and the first round will commence at 2.30 pm.

Top 14 players of the country, including six grandmasters and eight international chess masters, will participate in this prestigious selection event, said M S Gururaj, president, SKDCA, speaking at the press conference held on Wednesday December 10.

Six players selected from this tournament will form the ‘Indian Senior Chess Team’, and will represent India at world, Asian, Olympiad, and other international chess tournaments, he said.

The arrival of Kumaramangalam Birla with his daughter to the city for the tourney, is an indication of its success, said Gururaj. The tournament will be conducted on the round- robin format and there will be 13 rounds in all. Only one round will be held each day.

Anantaram of Chennai will be the chief arbitrator for the event. 

Apart from this, live coverage will be provided on websites using the Monrai System.

Players like Surya Shekar Ganguly, Parimarjan Negi, G N Gopal, Neelotpal Das, Deepan Chakravarty, Pravin Tipsay M, Ponnuswamy Konguvel, K Ratnakaran, Sriram Jha, M S Tejkumar, B Adibhan, S Satyapragyan, Shyam Sundar M, and Akshay Raj Kore, will participate in the championship.


Vasanta Lakshmi, treasurer, and Praveen T Mayya, vice-president, were present at the press meet.
