Mangalore: DC Requests Leaders to Strive to Maintain Communal Harmony

Mangalore, Dec 6: Addressing a meeting of various religious leaders convened at the office of the deputy commissioner(DC) here on Thursday December 4, Dakshina Kannada district DC M Maheshwar Rao requested the religious leaders, priests etc. to make concerted efforts to ensure that the communal fabric of the district does not get disturbed in the coming days, in view of the upcoming religious observations like Bakrid, Christmas, New Year, Puja by Ayyappa devotees etc., He also  promised to provide security all over the district with the help of the police department to ensure that peace prevails.

Speaking later, religious leader and District Congress Committee vice-president Kodijal Ibrahim pointed out that disturbances had occurred in the city during the Qurbani rituals pertaining to Bakrid last year. He asked the DC to provide police protection to Qurbani, a traditional religious observation.

Vishwa Hindu Parishat leader M B Puranik wanted the administration not to allow illegal transportation of cattle during the Bakrid and unbridled entertainment during the Christmas. He opined that everything should be held within certain limits.

Badriya College principal Dr Ismail suggested to draft strict rules about the frequent bomb hoaxes in the name of terrorist activities. He also suggested for the framing of guidelines for the observation of Qurbani.

Senior advocate Chengappa wanted security to be provided on priority to all the temples, mosques, churches and places of worship. He also asked the district administration to organize a harmony rally of all religions against terrorist elements.

General secretary of the district Bus Owners Association Aziz Partippadi said that private buses will henceforth, not stop plying even when bundhs and strikes are organized. He therefore, asked for police protection to buses plying during the early hours on such occasions.

Several others too came up with their opinions. Additional superintendent of police Dileep, zilla panchayat president Sucharita Shetty and headquarters assistant in the DC office Prabhakar Sharma were present.
