Mangalore, Dec 6: Ex-minister B A Moideen, reminiscing the life and ideals of ex-prime minister V P Singh who breathed his last on November 26 this year, hailed him as a great personality who gave up power for protecting constitutional rights of the country’s citizens. "At a time when political values are at the lowest ebb, we need leaders like the late Singh," he said.

He was speaking after paying public homage to the departed leader at a programme held in the revenue building here on Thursday December 4, as part of the month-long constitutional awareness campaign programme being held in association with the Dakshina Kannada district administration and SDM Law College till January 26.

"V P Singh implemented the Mandal Commission report that was kept in the backburner for a decade. As a result, he lost his position and power. The efforts made by him to achieve social justice deserve to be lauded. When values erode in a democratic system, the entire system goes awry. Therefore, we need to spread the importance of scientific thinking among our masses," he added.

Advocate Mohammed Hanif felt, that people are fighting with one another of late, as constitutional rights and values have not been implemented equally among the people. Lolaksha, another speaker, stressed that the country's uniqueness lies in unity in diversity. "A feeling of brotherhood needs to be inculcated among the citizens, and as Ambedkar himself admitted, this is a Herculean task. But, for providing social justice to all, a feeling of universal brotherhood needs to be bred and spread," he argued.

Prof Rita Noronha presided. Bhaskar Bykampady, Yadav Shetty and others were present.
