M'lore: Ujire School Emerges Champion of The Hindu Young World Festival

Mangalore, Dec 6: Boys made inroads into girls’ domain of rangoli drawing at The Hindu Young World Festival 2008 here on Friday and went on to win the first prize. In the debate competition, last year’s champions retained the title.

The finals of festival held here at the Town Hall witnessed spirited participation amid frequent beating of drums and dances by cheer leaders and students. After the inaugural dance performance by Nehal N. of Sharada Vidyalaya, Kodialbail, students showed multitude of talents on the stage while youngsters among audience could be seen dancing to the music.

The festive atmosphere was retained from the word go till the end. The two-day competitions were held in association with the Corporation Bank while the P.A. College of Engineering, Nadupadavu, was the co-sponsor.

Overall championship

Students of Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheswara English Medium High School, Ujire, Dakshina Kannada, who worked hard and displayed their all-round abilities, won the overall championship of The Hindu Young World Festival 2008. They cheered: “East or West. The Hindu is the best”. They also won the first prize as Cheer Leader.

Students of Kerala Samajam English Medium High School won the second Cheer Leader prize.

An interesting feature of this year’s event was that three boys of St. Aloysius High School, Mangalore, took home the first prize in rangoli competition. Prajwal, Jeevan Acharya and Anupam G. Lobo won the prize for their “Kalinga Mardana” rangoli.

Prajwal and Acharya said that they were part of a team which won the first prize for the same rangoli this year and last year at a competition organised by International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) here. The boys said that they do not draw rangoli at their homes daily. However, they do it for competitions. Like-minded boys have grouped together and participate in rangoli competitions.

A team of Nitha, Rakshitha and Navya of Shri Dharmasthala Manjunatheswara English Medium High School, Ujire, bagged the second prize and a team of Jeevitha, Siri and Sriraksha of Raj Academy English Medium School, Ganjimath, Dakshina Kannada, took home the third prize.

Like different hues of rangolis the students who participated in the competition were from different religions. Farzen, Mubeena and Tameeza, all eighth standard students of Hira Girls High School, Permannur, near Ullal, participated in the rangoli competition.

Debate

A team of Anjali Nelliat and Neha Dutt of St. Ann’s High School, Mangalore, won the first prize in the debate competition. This team had won the first prize in 2007. The team of Shreya and Nishana of NIT-K English Medium School, Surathkal, bagged the second prize this year and Bhargavi and Vaishnavi of Canara High School, Urwa, Mangalore, took home the third prize. The topic of the debate was “Abhinav Bindra verses cricket”.

Flower arrangement: Roxanne D’Souza, Gwen Casta, Oshin Theodore, first prize, St. Agnes High School, Mangalore; Karthik, Sandeep and Nitin, second prize, Cascia High School, Mangalore; and Milind D. Shenoy Prathiksha and Tripthi, third prize, Besant English Medium High School, Mangalore.

Cartooning: Karthik, St. Aloysius High School, Mangalore, first prize; Shabari Y. Ganiga, Besant English Medium High School, second prize; and Medha Urval, Shri Dharamasthala Manjunatheswara English Medium High School, Ujire, third prize.

Group dance (Indian classical): Shri Dharamasthala Manjunatheswara English Medium High School Ujire, first prize; St. Agnes English Medium High School, Mangalore, second prize; and Sharada Vidyalaya, Mangalore, third prize.

Group dance (Indian folk): Ideal English Medium School, Yedapadavu, Dakshina Kannada, first; Jagadeeshwara English Medium School, Chikmagalur, second; and Raj Academy English Medium School, Ganjimath, third.

Group dance (Western or filmy dance): Sharadaya Vidyalaya, Mangalore, first; Raj Academy English Medium School, Ganjimath, second; and Besant English Medium School, Mangalore, third.

Muralidhar Kamath, Deputy General Manager, Mangalore Zone, Corporation Bank, gave away prizes. Earlier, A.M. Prasad, Inspector General of Police, Western Range, inaugurated the competitions.
