Kundapur: Responsibility of Keeping Vigil at Ports puts Policemen on Tenterhooks

Daijiworld Media Network - Kundapur (SP)

Kundapur, Dec 3: The  recent  terrorist attacks on prominent landmarks in Mumbai that shook the country out of slumber, is sending shivers down the spine of the state police department. The state government has directed the police department, which is facing severe shortage of personnel, to keep vigil on local ports across the state's coast.

The state government has taken the possibility of the terrorists making use of sea route for attacks, seriously. The growing suspicion that the terrorists have strong connections with groups settled in Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada and Udupi districts, has made it to ask the police department to  seal sea routes that are open to being misused by terrorist elements.  The police stations as a result, have started deputing personnel to the local ports to keep a watch on the movements there.

As the terrorists might try to sneak into the country in the guise of fishermen, the policemen have the onus of ensuring that this does not happen. The department, which is gearing up to the challenges of maintaining law and order in a season full of programmes, religious celebrations, processions etc., is finding it hard to cope with the additional demand to guard ports.

While reading the above article, I realize that it is high time now for the authorities concerned to take note of my below mentioned apprehensions and act swiftly. I have travelled several times between Mumbai/Kundapur/Mumbai by train and also in other places in India. There is no absolute checking of baggage of the passengers. The trains stop at various designated stations for 1-2 minutes and the passengers rush in with their baggage. However, there is no baggage checking prior to or after boarding in any of the stations. As the terrorist activities have been increasing day-by-day, it is high time that the Railway authorities introduce the screening system by placing x-ray machines / metal detectors etc., from the security and safety point of view. As we are all aware that thousands of passengers commute daily by trains and their lives could be at risk if things are let loose like this.
