New Delhi, Dec 1: Distancing itself from party Vice President Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi's "women wearing lipstick and powder" remark, the BJP on Monday said the language used by the senior leader about demonstrations in Mumbai should have been more dignified.

"In a democracy people have a right to protest. And the anger of the people is not misplaced (after the Mumbai terror attacks). But even as you express dissent on an issue, the language should be dignified. His (Naqvi's) statement has gone beyond that," BJP national General Secretary Arun Jaitley told reporters.

Earlier, party spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy had said that BJP does not subscribe to any such views (expressed by Naqvi) and these are Naqvi's personal views.

While reacting to the demonstrations against politicians in the wake of Mumbai terror attacks, Naqvi had said, "Some women wearing lipstick and powder have taken to streets in Mumbai and are abusing politicians spreading dissatisfaction against democracy. This is what terrorists are doing in Jammu and Kashmir."

He said "in difficult times like these" some groups have decided to "wage a war against democracy" rather than waging war against the menace of terror.

Demonstrations are one's right in a democracy but it is sad to know that some media organisations have joined hands to present the politicians in a bad light. The channels are also engaged in presenting unfounded things to rake up a negative image of the politicians, Naqvi said.
