Udupi, Nov 29: Inspector General of Police (Western Range) A M Prasad said on Friday that proactive policing was needed to curb the menace of terrorism.

He was speaking at the inaugural function of the two-day workshop on “Protection of scene of crime”, organised by the Udupi District Police here. Prasad said that the police should increase their vigilance in the coastal areas. They should take cognisance of suspicious movement of people and suspicious objects lying anywhere.

If there was any complaint of such suspicious individuals or objects, they should be taken seriously.

Priority should be given for collection of advance intelligence. A meeting had been held on Thursday to discuss about strengthening of policing in coastal areas, he said. It was essential for policemen to have knowledge of law and investigation. Policemen should collect evidence in a legal manner.

Poor quality of investigation would bring down the conviction rate, he said and added that police officers should not refuse to register the first information report (FIR).

Superintendent of Police Pravin Pawar said that some inquisitive people always rushed to the spot of crime and spoiled valuable evidences. In the future, the crime scene police constables (CSPCs) would be sent first to protect the scene of crime, he said.

Additional Superintendent of Police M N Nagaraj welcomed the gathering. Deputy Director, Deputy Superintendent of Police Vishwanath Pandit was present.
