Mangalore, Nov 13: Philomena Lobo, principal, District Institute of Education and Training (DIET), said on Thursday November 13 that enrichment of the Konkani language is the responsibility of its native speakers. They must not show any kind of hesitation to speak the language, she added.

Addressing teachers after inaugurating the Konkani teachers’ workshop, jointly organized by Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy and DIET, Department of Public Education, at Shanthi Kiran, she said one must feel proud to be a Konkani. The outcome of the study done by Mandd Sobhann revealed that there about 30 Konkani-speaking communities in India. She expressed special appreciation for the Gowda Saraswat Brahmin (GSB) community for sticking to Konkani.

Chief guest Roy Castelino, president, Konkani Prachar Sanchalan, said that the Konkani language has a history of 5,000 years. "We should take the initiative to introduce Konkani language in PUC, BEd and other equivalent courses. Since it is a language which has been enlisted in the Eighth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, teachers have the great responsibility of improving it," he opined.

Expressing concern over the influence of alien languages on Konkani, K Narayan Kharvi, president, Konkani Sahitya Academy, said it would also affect the traditions and cultures of communities of vernacular languages. He added that PhD research should also be done in the Konkani language. Registrar S H Shivarudrappa, Eric Ozario, lecturer Steven Quadros and Fr Valerian Fernandes, were present on the occasion.

Congratulations! To all the organizers. All the best in your endeavors. The four fold skills of any language are Reading, writing, speaking and understanding. all Konkani speaking parents should see that their children know to speak, read, write and understand Konkani. Speaking and understanding Konkani should be a part of their lifestyle even if they live abroad. Competitions in Konkani at different levels should be organized. Some sponsors should come forward in support of this cause.
