Udupi, Nov 12:
The quarterly review meeting of Karnataka Development Programme (KDP) was held at the deputy commissioner’s office on Tuesday November 11, chaired by state home minister Dr V S Acharya.

Addressing the gathering of department officers and people’s representatives, Dr Acharya said that the erratic supply of electricity in the district will be solved by procuring power from Tannirbavi Barge Mounted Power Plant (GMR Power), Mangalore, at Rs 8.50 per unit.  On the issue of roads he informed that a tender of Rs 10 crore for repair of zilla panchayat roads in the district, had been awarded to a contractor, and the task will be completed by December 14.

Further, a tender will be floated for Rs 2 crore for repaving of roads under the Public Works Department (PWD) in all three taluks of the district, he said.  Dr Acharya added that a proposal had been received by the fisheries department to undertake urgent repairs to Fisheries Road at a cost of Rs 5 crore.  He said that Rs 14 crore had been reserved for improving drinking water facility. Drinking water will be supplied to residents of Paduvari locality in Byndoor taluk and Uppoor, near Bramavar as wells in these areas have been affected by seepage of saline water. The district will continue to have private and KSRTC bus services despite the call for nationalization of existing routes, added Dr Acharya.

He said that a meeting will be held in Bangalore, on Friday November 14, to simplify the functioning of the revenue department. The meeting will be presided over by revenue minister G Karunakar Reddy and attended by deputy commissioners, MLAs, and MPs of the undivided district of Dakshina Kannada.

Dr Acharya announced that Saturday November 15 will be a government holiday on account of Kanakadas Jayanti, and special programmes are scheduled to be held at Sri Krishna Math, in association with the MGM Kanakadas Study Centre.

Deputy commissioner Hemalata P, PWD and other department officers, zilla panchayat president Raju Poojary, MLAs Raghupathy Bhat, Halady Srinivas Shetty, Gopal Bhandary, Laxminarayan, and MLCs Pratapchandra Shetty, and Srinivas Poojary, were present.

As someone who has followed energy policies of both state and central govt for years, I think current BJP govt is on the right track. It is really not fair to blame current govt when earlier govts lacked future planning. * Karnataka govt took right step by signing agreement with Chattisgarh govt on a thermal plant which should be online in 4 years.

    * They are also renegotiating agreement with barge mounted plant at Tannir Bavi which will provide power to Karnataka grid next month (right now it goes all the way to Rajastan) And let us not forget that only leaders like Dr.Acharya and Veerappa Moily had vision to support Nagarjuna Plant coming up in Padubidri in spite of heavy opposition from their own local party leaders. This takes guts in our current political environment and I salute Dr.Acharya for thinking about the future when easy way out would have been resorting to cheap publicity for temporary political gain.

More meetings, more assurances, more promises and more publicity stunts. What we want is actions and proper results. Dr Acharaya cannot handle his own home ministry properly!? I am not sure what he is going to achieve in other areas. Anyway, I will salute Dr. Acharaya when he resolves the roads and power problems in our district.

Its really very nice to hear that Hon'ble Home Minister Dr.V S Acharya has taken initiative to solve the power crisis and also to improve bad road conditions of Udupi District. People should appreciate these development activities and should not relate this development activities to other old matters or issues which is irrelavent in this matter. Many thanks to Hon'ble Home Minister.
