MANGALORE, Nov 10: Chairman of Administrative Reforms Commission M. Veerappa Moily said here on Sunday that the Union Government will complete the work of developing the stretch between Surathkal and Nanthoor on the National Highway 17 by next month-end. However, fly-over works may not be completed, he added.

Addressing presspersons here he said the Union Government would complete the four-laning of the stretch between Nanthoor and B.C. Road by December, 2009. The Centre had sanctioned Rs. 33 lakh for repair of a 11-km stretch between Mulky and Padubidri and Rs. 2 croe to repair the 13-km stretch between Brahmavar and Sastan on NH 17. Mr. Moily urged the Mangalore City Corporation to adequately strengthen the Thumbay vented dam as the construction of a new dam there was likely to be delayed by more than two years. Mr. Moily accused the State Government of not handling the power crisis properly. It should have made efforts to purchase power from other States, he said.

With polls round the corner Moily/Congress party has started of with empty promises. Has Moily seen the current situation between Surathkal - Nanthoor strecth of the highway?? With the present progress there is no way that the work will completed by next month-end. If it does, for sure it will surprise many.

I remember that Shri Moily spoke of day-train running between M'lore and B'lur. That proved to be politician's rail running. Early completition of fourlane roadway now going on at turtle-pace may also be considered as another rail-running. The fact is that the Centre is less interested in going fast in States governed by Opposition Parties.
