End of Road for TV Soap 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi...'

Press Trust of India

Mumbai, Nov 4: It will be curtains down for popular Hindi TV serial 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kahi Bahu Thi' this Thursday after the Bombay High Court today declined to stay the termination notice served by Star TV to the producers of one of India's longest running soaps on the small screen.

The court order was given after the serial's producer Balaji Telefilms -- headed by Ekta Kapoor -- moved the vacation bench of the Bombay High Court last week seeking stay of the termination notice.

"Such relief is not possible", Justice J H Bhatia said.

Star has decided to scrap the serial following a drop in its Television Rating Points(TRP) between July and September this year. The serial is slated to end on November six when the last episode will be telecast.

" The programme has outlived its life. We had no motive to hurt Balaji," Star's counsel Ravi Kadam Kadam told the court. The serial has to be taken off the air because the channel was losing viewers of prime time slot to other channels, he said.

But Balaji's counsel Ram Jethmalani argued that the agreement between the two parties provided that the show will run at least upto March 2009.

The iconic family saga spread over three generations ruled the small screen for several years since it was launched in 2000 and struck a chord with Indian viewers worldwide.

The serial gained popularity as an early hindi soap and was centred on daughter-in-law Tulsi played by actor-politician Smriti Irani. Over 1,500 episodes spanning eight years have been telecast making Tulsi and Mihir Virani household names.

If Star TV had not stopped it, probably Ekta Kapoor would have continued this serial for another 50 years. Finally the channel people woke up. Its time for Ekta Kapoor to realise that she cant fool Indian audience with her "K" serials. If she doesnt come out with something new, her other serials would also suffer with similar fate.

The first reaction from me is to thank God for this has come to an end. The second reaction is to pray God to do the same to all the stupid serials telecast by TV Channels. The gory side is most of us parents lecture a lot to our children about what to do and what not to do. But unfortunately all this lecture ends bang at 8 pm when these stupid serials start.

I understand people need recreation and inspiration. But surely these serials do not provide both. God knows how many of us have Multiple Personality Disorder problems after watching these serials. So many of our children behave like 20- 25 year old adults and speak and do things that are learnt from these serials.

So many of us get so influenced that we have disagreements between many husbands and wives. Ekta Kapoor has clearly taken advantage of peoples emotions & has made a lot of money. But the psychological cost we people have paid is a lot.Its time for us to sit back & think how useful these stupid soaps have been to families and what negative change it has bought to our daily lives. For a change hopefully we can learn our lessons from this and create interest in our children to watch more useful channels. To do this we have to start useful channels.

Look at Channels like Discovery, NGC, History, there are many. But as we all know, to bring about a positive change in our children we have to change ourselves first. Come out of the stupid fantasy world and live real time. Thanks to all the Judges who realised this and I hope many more will.

Nice comment, from Indian Express, Mumbai: Finally the end has come for all the Saas Bahu.....Thank god the indian tv audience has come out of the so so unreal fiction of Balaji....where baa is now around 200 yr old, tulsi is 100 but still young healthy and beautiful.....and not telling you sbout the rest...Balaji had fooled the Indian tv audience for the last 8 yrs... Suggestion to Ekta Kapoor - try some other channel to air your dragging shows or why dont you launch your own channel to air your own shows till eternity...!

Ekta's serials have always depicted women in bad light and highlight it by heavy background music. Many of her serials are ruining our indian culture as well indian society. All serials have extra marital affairs, revenge & pre-marital sex, greed for possession of money & material etc. These kind of serials are against our stong cultural ethos and orthodox beliefs. BAN all her serials. Only looser from these bans are highly paid TV artists. Most of her artists practise what is shown in TV like extra, pre-marital ..........and multiple partners. They have shamed our culture and our country.
