North Korea seeks compensation from Japan for colonial occupation

Bangkok, Sep 26 (IANS): North Korea's state media on Wednesday demanded that Japan pay compensation for its colonization of Korea between 1910 and 1945, Yonhap news agency reported.

Japan would not be able to live confidently in the international community without repenting, apologizing and paying compensation for its wrongdoing, said the Rodong Sinmun newspaper, which is run by North Korea's ruling Worker's Party, reports Efe.

"Our people have not forgotten the past sin committed by Japan even for a moment," it added.

Talk of a summit between Japan and North Korea has increased since Pyongyang's summits with Washington and Seoul.

North Korean state media has insisted that Japan first make amends for the past.

Japan's Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has indicated he would be ready to meet North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un concerning the fate of Japanese kidnapped by Pyongyang to teach Japanese to North Korean spies.
