Udupi: Sugunendrateerta Swamiji Provides Initiation to Deepavali Celebrations

The grand celebration of Deepavali was set into motion at Sri Krishna Math here on the night of Sunday October 26. As we all know, the festival of lights is celebrated with pomp and gaiety all over the world.  Sri Sugunendrateerta Swamiji of Puttige Math symbolically kick-started the celebrations, by pouring a jug of water into many pitchers that had already been lined up, duly filled by water, on the night of Sunday October 26. 
 
Sri Sugunendrateerta Swamiji also signified the initiation of the hot water bath rituals, by symbolically applying oil to Sri Vidyavalabhateerta Swamiji of Kaniyoor Math, on the morning of Monday October 27. 
 


The celebration of Deepavali picks up momentum from Monday morning itself and will go on till Thursday October 30, all over the coastal districts.  Unique traditional rituals were performed across nooks and corners of these districts, on the occasion of Naraka Chaturdashi throughout the day on Monday.  Balindra puja and Tulsi puja will be performed all over the district here on Tuesday October 18, while the same will be held all over Dakshina Kannada district on Wednesday October 29.  Laxmi puja, cow puja, vehicle puja etc.,  will be held as part of the traditions followed in the respective regions.
 
Deepavali celebrations in the coastal district has significance to natives settled in other states across the country and abroad too, as they visit their native places on this occasion in order to take part in the festivities alongwith their near and dear ones. The occasion provides them an opportunity to reinforce and strengthen their bond with their family and community living here.
