Bangalore: Multi-storied Building Under Construction Collapses

Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, Oct 26: Two blocks of an under-construction multi-storied building of the Prestige group that was coming up in the outskirts of the city, collapsed to the ground here recently injuring atleast four persons, while there are doubts of more men having been trapped in the debris.

Portions of the building came crashing down, when the centring of the 16th floor of the building was being dismantled. Out of the three other blocks under construction, the third block suffered partial collapse while the buildings of the other two blocks are leaning precariously. As these buildings might crumble any time now, the fire brigade personnel were reluctant to undertake rescue work. There have been claims that some workers were present in the ground floor of the building when it crashed.

A township is coming up in 105 acres of land belonging to Telugu Desham MP Adikeshavulu, titled 'Prestige Shantiniketan'. Workers Srinivas(20), Dashrath(30), Jadudar(30) and Mahendra Prasad(30) were admitted to Vaidehi Hospital near the site of the accident, with grievous injuries.

As the work was going on in almost all the floors at the time the collapse occured, the concerned are finding it hard to estimate the actual loss, both monetory and in terms of loss of human lives. It is said, that the Prestige Group has given contract of the integrated township being built, to a Malaysian company.

South east zone deputy commissioner of police Soumendu Mukherjee, who rushed to the spot immediately after the accident, informed the presspersons that the policemen are unable to have a clear picture about the magnitude of the accident, other than the fact that four workers have been injured. Unless the building owner, engineer and contractor provide building plan and other information, it would be hard to take up rescue work, he explained. He also said, that a case will be registered against the builders and contractors of the township.

Fire brigade director B G Changappa too repeated what Mukherjee said. The personnel are waiting for proper details and explanations, he explained.
