Udupi, Oct 25: The activists of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike organized a protest in front of head post office in the city on Friday October 24 demanding classical status to Kannada language.

Earlier a rally by the protesters that commenced from the bus stand arrived at the head post office under the leadership of district president of Vedike Satish S Kalmadi.

The activists shouted slogans against the union government. Kannada language should be given classical status immediately. The Vedike is fighting against it from past three years but still the central government is not reacting, they blamed.

"Kannada language has the history of three thousand years. Volumes of exquisite literature have been formed in the Kannada language. Kannada has also bagged highest number of Jnan Pith award so far. State politicians have been demanding for classical status for long. But the union government has turned deaf ear to our demand. This cannot go on like this forever. If Kannada is not given classical status in another two-weeks' time, we will intensify our agitation," they warned.
