Sriharikota: History Created as Chandrayaan-I Launched Successfully

PTI

Sriharikota, Oct 22: Chandrayaan-1, India's maiden moon spacecraft, was on Wednesday put into Transfer Orbit around the earth by the Polar Launch Vehicle PSLV-C11 about 19 minutes after it blasted off from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre here.

The 1,380 kg Chandrayaan-1, carrying 11 payloads, was released into a Tansfer Orbit at a perigee (nearest point to earth) of about 250 km and apogee (farthest point from the earth) of about 23,000 km, 18.2 minutes after the PSLV-C11 blasted off as the scientists broke into jubilation at the mission control centre.

After a series of procedures over the next two weeks, the spacecraft would reach its desired Lunar orbit and placed at a height of 100 km from the Lunar surface, marking the operational phase of the mission which would put India in the elite lunar club.

Earlier, at the end of the 49-hour countdown, the 44.4 meter tall four-stage PSLV-11 lifted off from the second launch pad into a cloudy sky.

This is the 14th flight of ISRO's workhorse PSLV, which had launched 29 satellites into a variety of orbits since 1993, and 13th successive one in a row.

Chandrayaan-1 is carrying 11 payloads, five entirely designed and developed in India, three from European Space Agency, one from Bulgaria and two from US, which would explore the Moon over the next two years.

Mr.Ashok i fully agree with your comment, poor should not be forgotton,at the same time we must not forget to catch up with the pace with which the rest of the world is progressing, after these succesful launches India is on map of technology now not only in the field of software but also in space.  Countries come to us to use our launch pad to launch their systems/satellites,is it not income for us ? does it not make us proud?with these type of successful missions rest of the world starts to appriciate our workmenship/products/quality/Technology.we have rich natural resounces, rich talent all that we need is sound global market.

Am sure missions like these would make world to recognise the might of India, thus boosting our economy and GDP,It is not because of these mission India still has poverty,it is rather because the gap between the rich and poor is more, uneducation, curruption, bribes, riots, public property damages, communal violence, strikes all these matters,if these all were saved.

I think it could have sponsored 10 such missions, and helped thousands to lift from the poverty line. The mission chandrayan-1 made me so much proud of my country when i saw the picture(chandrayana 1) in one of UAEs leading news paper.Wonderfull.....really a proud moment. All the best for the scientist,Engineers who have put in their effort with the minimum resources to a maximum out put.I hope ISRO comes out sucessful in manned missions too.

Congratulations to the ISRO team. This is a feather in India's cap and someting for all Indians to be proud of. At the same time, as custodians of our democracy, we the people have to look at both sides of the coin. Was this expenditure necessary when millions are in poverty? My thoughts are that poverty is not eliminated in a day, nor can wishful thinking keep us at the leading edge of techological accomplishments.

It is these very accomplishements which will one day pay off and bring rich dividends and help in eliminating poverty, just like building all those educational institutions by our founding fathers has created a skilled labor pool which earns precious foriegn exchange for the country through the service and manufacturing sectors. Similarly, it is India's ability to put satellites in space that earns it the respect of other progressive nations and ultimately bring their business to our shores.

Habib may be interested in knowing where his saying comes from. I believe it is from the great Russian author, Maksim or Maxim GORKY. I am not certain I have the accurate quote, but it is possibly this (Maksim GGRKY): 'Today's MAN has learnt to fly in the air like birds, and swim in the sea like fish but he has not learnt how to live as MAN on the Earth' Should we place an add-on and continue: '.....and so He is trying his luck on the Moon' ?

Indeed The "Kaal-Chakra" is in place role reversal has taken place (?) Perhaps so. Now, I hope ISRO does not go overboard after its moon-landing and in Euphoria make claims such as "...... Scientists would now be able to tell 'how the Earth was forned 4 Billion years ago', and non-sense of that sort. It is a familiar lie as far as I am concerned. Be it as it may, I find it absolutely astonishing that Men around the world are so anxious about Space that they do not care even if they receive totally 'cock-and-bull' information about such matters, and wont mind waiting for more of the same with continued wonder. Lucky Space Scientists you !

Congratulations to the whole team who put an enormous effort in making Chandrayaan-1 successful. It is a remarkable and thrilling moment for all Indians. Our country becomes the sixth nation, after the US, Russia, European Space Agency, China and Japan who already entered the celestial territory. Every piece of discovery should be used to uplift the large section of the society, who is living below poverty line.

Good. Modern times! I think during this period of scientific advancement, it is very important to think and explore on the following comment: Learned people say that Man has learnt to fly in the sky like an aroplane, Man has learnt to swim in the ocean like a fish, but HE HAS NOT LEARNT HOW TO WALK ON THIS EARTH.
