Udupi, Oct 16: The Udupi City Bus Owners’ Association will provide monthly coupons for students travelling by city buses. The city buses in Udupi are run by private operators.

Addressing presspersons here on Wednesday, general secretary of the association K. Suresh Nayak said that each coupon book would have 60 coupons. Students would get a concession of 40 per cent on their travel. In addition, they would also be provided with identity cards by the association. The issuing of coupon books would start from Saturday. The coupon system would be effective from November 1. Mr. Nayak said that people with disabilities would be able to travel for free in the city buses. But they would have to get ID cards and free passes from the association. However, the decision of the association would be final in selecting who was eligible, he said.

The association was also thinking of providing coupon books to poor passengers who travelled daily. They would be given a concession of 25 per cent. The association will also introduce ticketing machines that will give details such as the company that owns the bus, the telephone number of the company, and the bus number. In cases of non-possession of tickets, a fine of Rs. 500 will be imposed on the commuter and the conductor of the bus concerned.

A complaint cell to look into grievances of commuters will be set up at the new office of the association.
