I am Ready to go to jail for the Sake of Development : Sonia Gandhi

Press Trust of India

Rae Bareli, Oct 14:  Defying Mayawati's attempts to scuttle her plans, Sonia Gandhi today visited her Lok Sabha constituency calling it her "karma bhoomi" and declaring that she is ready to go to jail for the sake of development.

"Rae Bareli and Amethi were the 'karma bhoomi' of Feroze Gandhi, Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. It is also the 'karma bhoomi' of mine and Rahul. Rae Bareli and Amethi are like my home. I want to ask, can anyone prevent me from coming to my home? No one can," she said in a brief interaction with reporters near the railway station in Lalganj, about 20 km away.

She also had barbs at Chief Minister Mayawati saying like the Rail Coach Factory in her constituency for which land allotment has been cancelled by the state government, there were at least eight such schemes on which the clearance has come the Centre but "all the hurdles are here only in Uttar Pradesh".

Asked if she was prepared to go to jail, Gandhi shot back "I am also ready to go to jail". Unfazed by the administration's apparent attempts to foil her plans for holding a rally today by imposing prohibitory orders, Gandhi flew straight to Fursatganj in a private aircraft skipping Lucknow.

Gandhi, who was cheered by slogan-shouting Congress workers who also garlanded her at some places, said she had planned to come here for the happy occasion of laying of the foundation stone for the Rail Coach Factory.

"You know the matter is now before the court and I will not make any comments," she said when asked about the cancellation of the land allotment by the Mayawati government.

On Saturday the district administration had cancelled the land alloted to the proposed coach factory citing the demand from local farmers. But, on a petition from the Railway Ministry yesterday, the Allahabad High Court virtually stayed the order pronouncing status quo on the issue.

Asked how her party planned to face Mayawati's onslaught, she pointed to UPCC President Rita Bahuguna Joshi and some other leaders and said "these people will take care".

Referring to the "hurdles" in the way of the Rail Coach Factory and the other schemes, Gandhi told the journalists "you may make your own calculations". While on her way to Lalganj, Gandhi's cavalcade was diverted from Sataon and Gurbuxganj, which are located in the area earmarked for the coach factory. When asked about the route change, she spoke of Rae Bareli and Amethi being the 'karma bhoomi' of the Gandhis.

Earlier, Gandhi visited the Baiswara Degree College where a special ward has been created to enquire about the condition of patients who have been treated by doctors of the 'Lifeline Express' train. She also inspected the train. On the way to Lalganj, Gandhi was stopped at several places like ITI crossing, Sataon, Gurubuxganj and Sajora where a number of people greeted her.

Earlier from the morning, the town was virtually turned into a fortress with heavy deployment of police force in view of her visit.

Gandhi cancelled her plans to address a rally in Lalganj town after the district administration decided to clamp prohibitory orders in the district.

The police have registered cases, including under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, against two Congress MLAs -- Ashok Singh and Shiv Ganesh Lodhi -- and 34 others. Of them, eight people have been arrested.

Vishal your comments do not make any sense what-so-ever. You seem to be a wolf in disguise trying to cover up your true identity in sheep clothing. No doubt a week ago some readers belted you left and right in reciprocation to your meaningless and biased comments.

Mr. Akhtar,  Why you are comparing Sonia to Maya? Maya is not fit to be Sonia's PA also. By mistake people of  UP have made her a Chief Minister & now they have started repenting. Don't say two faces of the same Coin.

You are talking about clean Govt. Who will give ? BJP gave a clean Govt when they were ruling for 5 years. Janata Party under Morarji gave a clean Govt. Janata dal gave clean Govt when they ruled. Everyday one New PM.

What do you mean clean Govt ? I think we have to use Tide to clean Govt's. Remember if you are thinking Manmohan Singh did not give a clean Govt no one can give.

Sonia and Mayawathi are two faces of the same coin. India has never seen such dirty politics of congress. I guess it's a dooms day for the congress. Good friends are distancing, like CPI, BSP, JD etc.

The democratic republic of India requires a clean government so that our future generation will not be one like you people. You two ladies creating a scene will not take you anywhere. Half of India's wealth is being looted by you politicians and another half to provide you people with security.

Ganesh it is not 2 Stupid Women fighting but only 1 stupid Women, Mayawati fighting. She will make Utter Pradesh fully Maya before completing her term. She cannot govern UP properly & her eyes are on PM's chair.

Remember Ganesh, Soniaji said NO to the PM chair which she got. No Indian would have done this so great sacrifice. If she was so power hungry she would have not missed this opportunity. Power hungry is Maya. One of the most corrupted state UP has become after Maya took over.

First of all she was most corrupt. Today Bayyas need such people. Think twice before saying anything.

Sonia, how do you think Rae Bareili is your "karma bhoomi"? You or your ancestors dont belong from this place? Do you know the meaning of "karma bhoomi"? Further why you want to scream and yell and make issues about the Rail Coach Factory.

Why not shift to other congress state. Shift it to Maharashtra as CM Deshpande is waiting with open arms like he did to TATA. But bad luck even the Indian Industrialists knows where their bread is buttered.

I am not in agreement with mr. Vishal D'Souza,s comments if you don’t want Sonia then don’t criticize. Give the good advice to a best politician to solve the problem instead of creating problems. Now Sonia is true Indian national, she was married an Indian and following Indian culture. What is your problem?

But much worried about these two, both of them were friends a while ago & BSP was supporting UPA government earlier suddenely what happened??? Congress & SP were enemies & they have become friends. Shame on Indian politics, very very dirty politicans including lady politcians.

They need 24 hrs black cat security.24 hrs airconditioned atmosphere. We request Sonia instead of going to jail , please try to STOP terrorism & forcible conversion being rampat throught India. Give more support for development.

Thousands of UP bhaiyyas are deprived of jobs by cancelling land allotment for Rail Coach Factory in UP by Mayawati Government. This is gross injustice by BEHENJI who has great concern for poor. Why resort to petty politics in regional Development? All schemes of developments and concern for poor comes to fore only when election approaches near.

As long as this land is not of Agricultural land, then all should support this industry irrespective which political party they belong to because with this railway factory many will get their daily bread as well as Railways will improve the standard of commuters, which Lalu Prasad keep doing.

I hope not somebody bribed some people to say it is the agricultural land so there will not be any development. If so, then we know the vision of many of our politicians for the betterment of our country.
