Udupi: National-level CME in Orthopeadics begins at KMC Manipal

Udupi, Oct 10: Inaugurating a national-level CME in Orthopeadics, pro-chancellor of Manipal University Dr HS Ballal, said "Orthopeadics and the field of medical sciences in general is witnessing rapid changes and improvements need to be closely followed." He called for doctors and students to keep abreast of latest developments in the field.

Quoting an old anecdote related to Albert Einstein, Dr Ballal said “Over the years, the questions remain the same, it is the answers that keep changing with progress in science."

Vice-chancellor of NITTE University, renowned orthopeadician and presently the chairman of the national Indian Association of Orthopeadics (IOA) Dr M Shantaram Shetty also drew attention of post graduate students to keep themselves updated with latest techniques or face the risk of being left behind in the race.

Rich tributes were paid to the yesteryears' 'doyen' of Orthopeadics, Dr Varghese Chacko, him being a 'teacher of teachers'. Dr Chacko is credited with establishing the department of orthopeadics at the Kasturba Hospital, Manipal which has gained national fame over the years. Patients not only from across the country, but even abroad come for their treatment to the specialists at Manipal. Several surgeons and doctors seemed excited to be in the presence of Dr Chacko.

Leading Arthroscopy (knee joint) specialist and dean of Kasturba Medical College, Manipal, Dr Sripati Rao welcomed the gathering and emphasized on the importance of continuing medical education for doctors. Dr Sripati Rao also gave a scientific talk on recent advances in the field of Arthroscopy.

Peadiatrician and vice-chancellor of Manipal University Dr Raj Warrier will address the post graduate students on topics related to peadiatric orthopeadic problems. Registrar of Manipal University, Dr GK Prabhu was present at the function.

President of Karnataka Orthopeadic Association Dr U Mallya from Mangalore was present along with the head of department of orthopeadics at KMC Manipal, Dr Mohanty and senior surgeon Dr Raghuram.

The CME which will be held for three days includes scientific sessions, discussions, case presentations, surgical procedures demonstrations, quiz competitions and suturing workshops to be held for the delegates who have come in large numbers from across the country.
