Jodhpur: Chamunda Temple Stampede, At least 72 Dead

Jodhpur, Sep 30: In one of worst tragedies in Rajasthan, at least 103 people, mostly men, were killed and about 30 injured in a stampede that took place when thousands of devotees gathered at a 15th century temple in Jodhpur on the occasion of Navratri festival on Tuesday.

Worshippers had gathered at the Chamunda Devi Temple situated on a hill top in the precincts of Mehrangarh Fort when the tragedy struck at around 5.30 am after some devotees slipped on a slope causing the stampede.

At least 103 people have died while 29 others, who were injured, were being treated in various hospitals, Rajasthan's Principal Secretary (Home) S N Thanvi said.

"As some devotees slipped on the slope on the temple path, others gathered there started falling on each other causing the stampede. A majority of those killed died due to suffocation as a result of the stampede," he said in Jaipur.

Director General of Police, Rajasthan, K S Bains, however, said nearly 100 people were injured in the incident.

Officials said most of the dead were men as the stampede took place in the separate queue for males for going to the temple.

About 15 to 20 people were killed at the spot while others succumbed to their injuries in Mahatma Gandhi Hospital, Mathura Das Hospital and Sun City Hospital, among others, in Jodhpur, they said. The dead include a large number of young people, they added.

The devotees in large numbers, including women, had gathered at the temple from early this morning on the occasion of Navratri festival.

Rajasthan Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria said sufficient police deployment had been ensured and there were separate queues for men and women.

But there was a huge rush in the queue for men and some people slipped on a slope, which led to the stampede, Kataria said.

Civil authorities have sought the help of the army to deal with the situation, Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Kanhaiya Lal said.

Officials said the stampede occurred as the devotees along the 2-km-long route to the temple tried to rush towards its door as soon as it opened.

The situation went out of control as devotees, carrying offerings, jostled with each other and tried to rush towards the temple door breaking the barricades, they said.

Inspector General of Police, Jodhpur, Rajiv Dasod said some of the devotees slipped on the 75-metre-long slope on the temple path causing the stampede in the 100-metre zone around it.

"There has been no casualty in the queue for women in which a large number of children were also present," he added.

Dear Mr. Bhat, I don't think that I am sounding religious fanatic by suggesting that Bajrangis should volunteer to guide people in places of worship. Why not? Tell me what makes you wonder that I am cruel when I say that this incident is not the first of its kind in India? Is it not the reality? I am just pointing out that if people were guided by volunteers in pilgrim places lot of casualties can be avoided in future. & mind you, I have personally known my friends & relatives suffer physically & mentally due to what happened in Mangalore because of some fanatics when they went destroying churches. Was it not enough of National tragedy or would you like to justify it as just an unfortunate incident. One more thing, I have heartfelt sympathy for people who died & injured in the stampede at Chamunda temple not because they belong to any particular religion but because they were Indians and fellow human beings like me. Read my comment carefully before deciding about status of my heart.

Dear Ms. Kripa, I would like to inform you that I truly mourn the tragedy which occured at Chamunda Temple. Please note that I am not bringing in religion here but suggesting that all those Bajarangis who vandalised the churches (& openly accepted responsibility for the attacks)and start communal violence at the of hat why not they work as volunteers at places of worship to guide the devotees.

Don't you think that the job of police would be lessened if there are volunteers there? Afterall this is not the first case of stampede in temples in India this year. The bajrangis would have opportunity to do some quality work and also opportunity to prove that they are the heroes that they depict to be.

This is a very sad tragedy. Unimaginable. A national tragedy. So many people dying because of stampede. Stampede this year in India has killed almost double the people than all the bomb blasts put together. It is a matter of great concern. At festivals it is quite common that people rush to the temples in large numbers. Knowing the recent incidents of stampedes at temples the Police must have atleast let people go in batches. Unfortunately we seem to learn only after tragedies of such massive scale in each city. Henceforth security must be on high alert whenever there is a large religous gathering at any place all over India to prevent these kind of tragedies.

Perhaps Ms Smitha Mascarenhas did not see some of the other reader's comments. Humans died here - brothers, sisters, mothers and fathers! The only acceptable humane response from a compassionate reader is sympathy as some of the readers have expressed, independent of their religious backgrounds.

Then there are readers like Smitha Mascarenhas and Rajesh, whose thoughts and emotions appear to be warped. They chose to see communalism and politics in what is essentially a very human tragedy. Beyond expressing compassion, the other humane thing to express is concern at the administration's repeated failures to foresee and prepare to prevent such situations as they appear to be happening in increasing frequency!

It is easy and instinctive to fall into the groove of blaming politicians or religions - but before doing that, ask yourself one simple question, qualified by an honest answer: if you were born into the another religion, would you be faithful to the religion you belong to now?

All those jobless bajrangis who attacked places of worship in Karnataka, why not go to Jodhpur and work as volunteers to help injured people? afterall, they need your services and support. In your agenda as saviours of Hinduism please include the clause to save your own people in situations like this. Hope at present there is no other agenda in your organisation apart from attack on other religions against conversion & cow slaughter. Atleast prove that you are real heroes by serving your people who are injured in Jodhpur.

I cannot help but commenting on Mr. Rajesh's comments. You are a political extremist. You aren't worried about the people and are talking rubbish. About the government? who really cares..? don't drag politics to every single issue. Tomorrow if another natural calamity like a tsunami occurs, will u still blame the goverment? give us all a break !

krishna, mangalore, What are you trying to say - God is behind all in this cases Vani. If God is behind this case, then we should not help those who are injured. We may be going against God!!! Though I can not say for sure the exact cause of stampede, it could be due to insufficient planning as all precautions should have been taken when there is a large crowd.

There is always excitement and curiosity when the door opens or someone speaks for the first time or a VIP visiting. All these should be taken into consideration while planning. In future, the people should be told not go get panicky when there are rumours. (just as we tell people not to pick up objects of suspicion) My sincere condolences to the bereaved families. May God give these families strength to overcome the tragedy.

Really very sad of hearing the news of stampede in the temple. This is not the first time happening earlier also in some places had been happened. Lack of discipline, perhaps lack of volunteers and panic gripped them to run which should have been instructed all the devotees in advance. My heart felt condolences to all who have died and wish all the best to those injured to recover soon.

Feel anguish at the loss of innocent lives and broken lives left behind. Words are not enough to express my anger at the temple authorities and civil authorities for not learning from the past stampede incidents. What preventive measures are necessary to prevent such stampedes.THIS IS MANMADE ( lets not bring God here) as we don't learn from the lives lost here.

Cant the temples spend more on INFRASTRUCTURE for better people/ crowd management? This is the need of the hour- more infrastructure and personnel to control the mass of devotees. Let these stampeded never happen again!

Lack of arrangement by the authorities led to this disaster . Not a single ambulance was there to assist the injured people . Police personnel cannot be blamed as they were less in number to handle large crowd .

Oh this is very sad! Very sad to know such things do occur in India! Do anyone have any concern or comments on the issue! Is any one interested in asking the government to quit? Blame police for not providing enough security? So on and on!! Well being majority Hindus definitely has no right to blame anyone for sure? Feel pity for the government whichever party rule the state, responsibility is completely on them. Irresponsible ministers and government force.

I am really saddned by stampede at a Hindu temple in the Indian state of Rajasthan. These stampedes have become a regular feature during any festivals due to irrsponsibilty and lack of sensitivity of law enforcement agencies. Inspite of regular recurrences, why administration has turned a blind eye to these kind of tragedies?

Why do Government pay them salary from tax payers money? DISMISS ALL PEOPLE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SAME AND ARREST THEM FOR MASS MURDER.

Some one said about bomb, people started running...! Definitely it seems Hindus & BJP ruled states have been targetted all over the country. Definitely a major Indian political party & some antinational elements involved in these incidents only to malign BJP & to provoke Hindus against BJP only to capture power as people of this country has lost faith in the present Cogress led UPA govt. Major incidents are happening in BJP ruled states be it BOmb blasts, temple stampedes, Church attacks & many more..why? & who is behind all this???
