Gandhinagar: Godhra Panel Gives Clean Chit to Narendra Modi

PTI

Gandhinagar, Sep 25: The Sabarmati Express coach burning was a "pre-planned conspiracy", a probe panel has said also giving a clean chit to Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and the state police in the subsequent post-Godhra riots that claimed over 1,000 lives.

The report, which went into the coach burning in February, 2002 that left 58 kar sevaks returning from Ayodhya dead, said it "was a pre-planned conspiracy" hatched at the Aman Guest House in Godhra.

The train carnage was cited as the reason by Hindu outfits to justify the post-Godhra pogrom.

This finding of the two-member Commission goes contrary to a probe headed by another former Supreme Court judge U C Banerjee set up by the Lalu Prasad-headed Railway Ministry that the coach burning was purely an accident. Retired justice Akshay Mehta was the other member of the Nanavati Commission

"There is absolutely no evidence to show that either the Chief Minister or any of the ministers in his council or police officers had played any role in the Godhra incident," said the report of Justice G T Nanavati, a former Supreme Court judge, that went into the train burning incident.

The first part of the report was tabled in the state Assembly on Thursday and evoked instant criticism from political parties and activists opposed to the BJP. They contended that the Commission was set up to "mislead" the people.

The conclusion that the train burning was a "pre-planned conspiracy" was based on various grounds including the statements of the passengers of the train that stone pelting continued for 10-20 minutes to prevent the passengers from coming out of the coach.

140 litres of petrol was purchased by Razzak Kurkur and Salim Panwala to execute the conspiracy, the Commission said adding that according to eyewitnesses, Shaukat Lalu and Mohammad Latika, had possibly opened the sliding door connecting the S6 and S7 coaches and entered S6 through that door.

One Hassan Lalu had thrown a burning rag which had led to the fire in the S6 coach, it said.

On the conspiracy, the report said it was hatched at the Aman Guest House on the directions of Maulvi Umarji and executed by Razzak Kurkur, Salim Panwala, Shaukat Lalu, Imran Sheri, Rafique Batuk and Shiraj Bala.

"The conspiracy hatched by these persons further appears to be a part of a larger conspiracy to create terror and destabilise the administration," the report said.

Giving a clean chit to Modi in the post-Godhra events, the Nanavati Commission said there was no evidence to show there was lapse in the role of the chief minister or his ministers in providing protection, relief and rehabilitation to the victims of communal riots or in the matter of not complying with the recommendations and direction given by the National Human Rights Commission.

Reacting to the report, Justice Banerjee, who headed the railway ministry appointed probe, said it was an accidental fire and there was no question anyone pouring petrol or indulging in a conspiracy in this regard.

"I have no doubt about it," he said adding it cannot but be an accidental fire.

There are beliefs, disbeliefs and allegations of being wrong, on each of the reports concluded by Justice Banerji and Justice Nanavati. However, It must be noted that Justice Banerjee was appointed by Lallu, who had openly said that Godhra was an accident. While Justice Nanavati was named by the high court. Second: If this was an accident, which was the so grave a reason that the death toll in a stationery bogey was as high as 58 people.

Could not a single person jump out from any one of the four doors of the bogey, to give us first hand account? While it is so easy for any one to write off the incident as an accident, specially when the boss (Lallu) himself wants the report to be that way, it is difficult for me, and for any same man to believe that Justice Nanavati has concocted the several interviews and statements.

I am no friend of Modi, specially because he is against Christians, but I must give credit to the Nanavati report and believe it to be true. Modi is seperate, and those who were burnt in the bogey are seperate. Let the souls of those dead in the incident have atleast this justice.

The Nanavati report came out with half the truth. But what happened in the aftermath of the tragedy was much horrible and that should have been investigated. The roles of the communal elements should be brought to light.

The burning of the train and the events of violence under the leadership of Modi are to be criticised equally. However to give a clean chit to a communal leader like Modi is truely a mockery of law. Two commission givinig two conflicting reports. Nanavathi commission report is a very baised report, far from truth to safeguard Narendra Modi and his BJP.

What happened in Godhra and the riots is truly a horrible tragedy. Its people who lost their life, for man made blunder. Media must go one step ahead and dramatize (with computer graphics) the event's as mentioned by the Nanavati commission report & Banarjee report. Certainly in Nanavati report there are chain of events mentioned how it is happened. When Arushi case before getting to court gets dramatized, why can't the report which is tabled and is in public domain to dramatize graphically and publish? These reports are compiled after year's of energy, time and public money.

According to Bannerji Report, Godhra train coach burning was said to be a kind of self-immolation of over 50 Kar-sevaks en-mass. It is a wonder how can anyone, or rather the politicians believe the story of self torching of the train bogies.

One can come to a conclusion as to how different commissions give different reports. whether burning the train was a conspiracy or not, killing innocent people, raping helpless women and burning the people including the Ex-MP from Gulmarg society, levelling the roadside religious shrines overnight is definitely a conspiracy of the Parivar. In this country they do everything in the name of religion. Rape, murder of minorities is justified as if it is sanctioned by God. One has to read the publication by Eminent citizens & retired panel to understand the deep rooted conspiracy of the Parivar to wipe out the innocents. Mr Modi is part of this Parivar.

CONGRATULATION! Shri Narendra Modi, CM of the proud Developed Gujarat State. Now the case of Homocide should be booked against Maulvi Umarji,Razzak Kurkur, Salim Panwala, Shaukat Lalu, Imran Sheri, Rafique Batuk and Shiraj Bala in Gujarat and the culprit should be hanged without any mercy shown.

Congress will have a bad dream today as Narendra Modi will be haunting them in their dreams. Long live Narendra Modi and may you emerge as a winner always. We are hoping to see you as our future PM. Gujarat is a clean, safe and developed state unlike Bihar and UP. Most industrialist should shift their industries to Gujarat for a better India. Jai Hind.
