New Delhi: Left and Allies Knock Prez Doors

New Delhi, Sep 9:
Accusing the Government of "concealing" information on the nuclear deal, Left parties and their three allies on Tuesday asked President Pratiba Patil to direct the government to immediately convene the monsoon session of Parliament to discuss the issue among others.

Parliamentary Party leaders of CPI(M), CPI, RSP, Forward Bloc, BSP, TDP and JD(S) met Patil and said that a "minority government was suppressing the majority" by not convening the monsoon session, sidelining the House and rendering it "meaningless".

"There are various serious issues which are to be debated like the nuclear deal, runaway inflation, attack on Christians in Orissa and others. (But) the government has cancelled one session. Common man is waiting for the government's reply," CPI(M) leader Sitaram Yechury said.

"It is unprecedented in the history of independent India that the monsoon session has been cancelled. This we consider as a deliberate manipulation of established traditions concerning the sessions of Parliament," he said.

The leaders said "a series of reports have appeared suggesting that the assurances made by the Prime Minister on the deal have been violated. Worse, there are reports that suggest that crucial information was concealed.

"These are serious matters concerning the sovereignty and security of India and its independent foreign policy. The Parliament, therefore the people, are being deprived of their fundamental right to make government accountable and answerable on these matters," they said in a memorandum.
