Karkala, Aug 23: Police investigations have revealed that Evangeline (21), wife of Rajamani, who committed suicide on the evening of Thursday August 21, did so because of harassment related with dowry. Her marriage was just 45 days old, when she chose to end her life.

Husband of the deceased Mutturajan alias Rajamani reportedly pestered her repeatedly to bring in more money as dowry. He is said to have repeatedly tortured her physically and mentally on this issue. At the time of the marriage, he had not demanded for any dowry but started demanding it later. As her family refused to yield to his demands, he had come back to Moodbidri, leaving her with her parents. Ten days ago, Mutturajan's brother and sister-in-law accompanied Evangeline back to Moodbidri and delivered three sovereigns of gold her family had given towards dowry to her husband.

Mutturajan, a habitual drunkard, started torturing Evangeline again for more money. Deeply hurt, the lady committed suicide when her husband was asleep. Mutturajan with the help of a relative named Shekhar and his assistant Manohar, admitted Evangeline to Alva's Hospital Moodbidri, where he came to know that she was brought dead.

He left the hospital on the pretext of bringing money and has been absconding since then.
