Udupi, Aug 13: It is learnt that police constable Shrikar, one of the accused in the case of assault on rickshaw driver on Tuesday August 12, has been arrested by the police and produced in the court.

Police sources said that Nityanand, who was reportedly assaulted by the policemen and the alleged assailants were friends and had their dinner together on that day. Refusal to carry the policemen in the autorickshaw because they had been drunk, as stated in the complaint, may not be the actual reason for the scuffle, they surmise. They are also verifying the statement of another auto driver Mohan Bangera that he was beaten up when he tried to intervene when the policemen assaulted Nityanand.

The rickshaw drivers submitted a memorandum to the superintendent of police (SP) on Tuesday evening. It is learnt that the SP promised that the other accused would also be arrested by last night and the other two will be interrogated.
