Mangalore, Aug 13: State higher education minister Arvind Limbavali has informed, that the state will soon have its own knowledge commission. He was speaking after inaugurating the Socio-Cultural Research and Study Centre at T V Raman Pai Convention Centre in the city on Tuesday, August 12.
The proposed commission will function under the direct guidance of the chief minister, and will cover medical, engineering and Law University, he revealed. On the occasion, the minister also launched eight new certificate courses including mass communication and journalism.
Limbavali said that he was disappointed at the low rates of admission into post graduate courses in the state, which stands at 11%. I want to take this ratio to at least 15% during my term. He hailed Canara College for pioneering educational ideas and serving students well. He expressed the hope that the certificate courses would soon grow into degree courses.
Speaking to the media later, he said, that the IT major Wipro chairman Azim Premji had held talks with himself and the chief minister regarding setting up of private university in the state. An act on their establishment will be tabled in the next assembly session, he stated.
Prof K V Kodandaramaiah, director of collegiate education, asked the colleges to provide importance to improving emotional quotient, cultural quotient and spiritual quotient in addition to intelligence quotient.
Mangalore University vice chancellor Prof K M Kaveriappa, who presided over the programme, said that the university would recognize the certificate courses started by Canara College. Once the recognition is accorded, other colleges can follow the syllabus framed by the college to start courses there, he said. Mangalore University wants to start Yoga classes in all colleges soon, and as a preliminary exercise, the Yoga Chair of the university has plans to train the trainers in Yoga, he revealed.
