Udupi: Resenting ANF Misbehaviour, Lawyers to Begin Dharna

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Aug 13: Members of Udupi District Bar Association will be sitting in dharna in front of the district court complex from Wednesday August 13 onwards, demanding legal action against the Anti-Naxal Force (ANF) personnel for their alleged misheaviour with the advocates. If their demand is not met before August 15, the lawyers will undertake hunger strike by rotation thereafter, informed Udupi Bar Association president Mattar Ratnakar Hegde and secretary Dinesh Nayak.

At an emergency meeting of the association held on Tuesday August 12, a resolution was adopted, condemning the registration of a false complaint against the lawyers. The resolution demanded for the withdrawal of the false case, alleging that it was a ploy adopted by the ANF police to cover up their deeds. The association has asked the lawyers from the state not to represent the accused in the case. The lawyers abstained from court work on Tuesday August 12.

The association clarified that the ANF police abused the group of lawyers on a visit to Sirimane falls because they had entered the prohibited area. ANF superintendent of police Ramadasa Gowda, instead of collecting true facts, has tried to hold the lawyers responsible for the ANF lapses. He had earlier said that he would attend the emergency meeting of the association and apologize for what had happened, but has changed his stand later, they criticized.

Dakshina Kannada additional superintendent of police R Dileep, who also happens to be the in-charge superintendent of police of Udupi district, held talks with the lawyers at the Bar Association office on the night of Tuesday August 12 in connection with the alleged assault on the lawyers at Kigga.

On the instructions of the state home minister Dr V S Acharya, the responsibility of holding investigations on the complaint lodged by the lawyers, was handed over to him. MLA K Raghupati Bhat, DySP M B Nagaraj, Bar Association president Mattar Ratnakar Hegde and other office-bearers took part in the meeting.
