Bangalore: Increase of Retirement Age - HC Issues Notice to State Govt

Daijiworld Media Network - Bangalore (SP)

Bangalore, Aug 13: In connection with a petition filed by a Bangalore advocate Jagadeesh Shastri against the state government's decision to increase the retirement age of its employees to 60 years from the previous 58, the High Court on Monday August 11, ordered issuance of notices to the state government.

The petitioner says that the above decision will further complicate the existing un-employment problem plaguing the State. He also argued that the government needs to affect amendments to the Cadre and Recruitment Rules before making any major changes in the service regulations. This involves inviting of objections from the public, which has not been done, Shastri averred.

The government's decision was not done after following prescribed rules and procedures. Hence, the above decision is unconstitutional, he contends.

A bench comprising of Chief Justice P D Dinakaran and Justice V Gopala Gowda which heard the petition, remarked that the court cannot interfere in the policy matters of the State. The bench also observed that there is no public interest involved in the caser. However, it asked the government counsel to file objections if any and produce relevant records pertaining to the case.

I agree with and support advocate Jagdeesh Shasthri that the government's decision to raise retirement age will further complicate the unemployment issue in the State. We already have youngsters well qualified, but have no openings in the job-market, because of those seniors who have lost their focus. The government's unthought-and arbitrary decision to please only a certain category/ class of people will not only aggravate the unemployment problem, but also render society more unproductive. Fifty eight years are more than sufficient to do sufficient harm (for those unwilling to be of genuine service) raising retirement age will worsen the matter - increase financial burden on the government (society)and make society pauper! I request the government not to resort to these vote-bank politics. Please revert the decision.
