Mangalore, Aug 7: Radio is a very influential tool of mass media, which can reach out both the educated and the illiterate people at the same time and has grown into a progressive communication medium and has earned a place for itself in the day to day lives of the people, said Akashvani senior announcer Shakuntala R Kini.

She was delivering a lecture on the subject of 'relationship between radio and its listeners' organized under the aegis of Mangalore Radio Listeners' Association.

Radio, which initially started functioning with the sole objective of providing encouragement to spreading culture and art, has expanded its spread to cover social, financial and educational spheres. Letters from knowledgeable listeners from the society which critically analyze the programmes being aired by the radio stations have worked to make the radio stations to improve the quality of their programmes, she analyzed.

Radio stations, by airing programmes on all subjects, have helped average listeners to have some knowledge all fields like literature, sports, music etc. The relationship between radio and its listeners is created through a meaningful process. Without listeners, radio programmes become wasteful exercise, Kini noted.

Karnataka Bank chairman Ananthakrishna's wife Renuka Ananthakrihna, who presided over the programme, said in her address that a rich variety of programmes have contributed to the enrichment of the functioning of the radio. The relationship which started with more and more expectations on the part of the listeners has grown into a stronger bond between the two, she said.

President of Mangalore Radio Listeners Association U Rama Rao welcomed. P Ravindra Rao and Lata Barvathaya introduced the guests. Sujata Murali proposed vote of thanks. Savitri Rama Rao presented the programme.

Entertainment programme followed the lecture.
