Where's all the money going? 7,000 super-rich Indians shifted base in 2017

New Delhi, Feb 4 (PTI): India witnessed the second largest number of millionaire outflow globally after China with 7,000 high net worth individuals changing their domicile during 2017, 16 per cent more than 2017, according to a report.

According to the report by New World Wealth, 7,000 ultra- rich Indians shifted overseas in 2017. In 2016, the figure stood at 6,000, while in 2015 as many as 4,000 millionaires shifted base.

Globally, as many as 10,000 super-rich Chinese changed their domicile in 2017. Other countries that witnessed large high net worth individual (HNWIs) outflows include Turkey (6,000), United Kingdom (4,000), France (4,000) and Russian Federation (3,000).

As per the migration trends, Indian HNWIs moved to the US, the UAE, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, while Chinese HNWIs moved to the US, Canada and Australia.

The report, however, noted that the outflows of HNWIs from India and China are not "concerning" as these countries are producing far more new HNWIs than they are losing.

"Also, once the standard of living in these countries improves, we expect several wealthy people to move back," it added.

On the other hand, Australia was the top country for HNWI inflows in 2017 with 10,000 ultra-rich people shifting base to this country, beating out its main rival the US for the third year running.

Over the past 10 years, total wealth held in Australia has risen by 83 per cent compared to 20 per cent growth in the US. As a result, the average Australian is now significantly wealthier than the average US citizen, which was not the case 10 years ago, it added.

The US was the second most popular destination for migrating HNWIs in 2017 at 9,000, followed by Canada (5,000) and United Arab Emirates (5,000).

As per the report, India has been ranked sixth in the list of wealthiest countries with total wealth of USD 8,230 billion.

India is home to 3,30,400 HNWIs (individuals with USD 1 million or more in net assets). Globally, India was ranked 9th in this aspect. The country has 20,730 multi-millionaires, 7th largest in the world. And in terms of resident billionaires, India with 119 such individuals was named among the top three countries globally, after the US and China.

A billionaire is defined as an individual with net assets of USD 1 billion or more.

Global wealth migration is accelerating and around 95,000 millionaires (HNWIs) migrated in 2017, compared to 82,000 in 2016 and 64,000 in 2015, the report noted.

If I was rich, I would do the same. Just think why would I like to live in a place where an individual's rights are not respected?? Where there is no real freedom???

Rich people are moving to the west because of better life for their children. There's equality especially in the US. Most people are moving to Australia because in addition to the continent separated by the rest of the world by water on all sides, the weather is better when compared to Canada. The benefit of US is that it has all the weathers in different parts of the country in addition to being located in the right place in the continent surrounded by Atlantic & Pacific ocean. Due to different weather in different parts of the country it doesn't have to import much agricultural produce from the rest of the world.
The best of the universities & colleges are located in the US. There is equal opportunity for everyone especially in public universities like UC Berkley which is one of the top and comparable to any private universities. Cal Tech which is private university is one among the top in the world. Here if one is focused on his studies he/she can reach up to the top even if he/she may not be that rich . This is not seen in any other part of the world. Here "Dreamers" who came here as children without any documents are in top positions in different companies which is best example that US treats everyone equally even those who are without documents.

Absolutely! There's a crime behind every fortune (The Godfather). Also ironically those who are well settled in the west 'hope' for the migratory mentality of the folks back home to change! Probably they hate to see their 'exclusivity' getting diluted with west getting thronged with more Indians!

Ultra rich Indians would be foolish not to shift base from India. Modi and RSS-BJP's economic ideas have caused terrible economic damage to India and more bad ideas can be expected from RSS-BJP.

See the miracle of BJP. This figure increased from 2015 onwards. Vote BJP and empty India. Let the cows take over their place. Out of 7000, 6990 from BJP states no doubt. This is called "BJP kay saath aamiron ka vikas, garibon ka sowhar".

There is a common saying that rich Indians moving abroad is actually not a "brain drain" but a "brain gain". Majority of the rich Indians, according to our various interviews abroad, are moving abroad mostly because of their children Education. Most of the parents would like to witness their children's Educational welfare by being close to their children. Whenever qualified adults move abroad they take their children with them obviously to live together, and that's where the aged parents also try to move abroad for an indefinite period with a view to spend more time with their grand children and see their welfare in life.

For a rich Indian, frankly speaking, there is no better place than India. The family living, the neighborly living, and the presence of the Temples, Mosques and Churches - there is no place like India. The cultural ties, the religious ties, and also the community connections, India is the best place to be together and enjoy the luxuries of life in the surrounding of your own culture, language, religion and much more.

The only secret that a rich Indian many times forget is that they still do not know the fact that the richness is a God's gift that has to be shared wherever possible and diversify their economy by being able to share certain portion of their wealth with many others around. That's the only snag that a rich Indian forgets to exercise while in India, and therefore discretely tries to move out of India with a view to enjoy their own wealth and happiness abroad. Hopefully, this mentality will change, and the rich Indians will try to stay in their own country and enjoy all the God given wealth and health by being happy and satisfied. This is just our observation and feeling.

    Dear Mr. & Mrs. Rasqhinha,

But one thing sure about the migrating parents is that they are not instilling a 'love for the nation' in their children's mind. All they want is to get out of the nation and the same attitude is passed down to the next generation. Once the children do their studies abroad, they are incompatible to their peers in India whether to secure a job or run an empire.

Have you one example about a student come from abroad to answer CET having cracked it with higher grades though s/he is a topper in her base college ? Whereas, in India there are examples of auto an drivers' child, Municipal sweeper's child topping it. Send one visiting young man/woman to file his/her own tax in India ? S/he will come back drained out but never able to complete the task. Agree, with their money they can hire people to do the jobs (except of-course CET) but this doesn't require their presence in India either.

When such failures are faced by the children of parents settled abroad, they give up dreaming about a life in India. So goes the story - parents, children and grand children all settle abroad, never to return. Whereas, for us who are here, though the other side seems greener, the life here, if there is sufficient income, its not as tough as you guys dread it to be.

Moral of the story is, though you have money, the money doesn't clean after you. Seeking lavish lifestyle if you flee, some day that country, over some problem, will ask you to leave when there is no other place on the planet than where you originally belong.

Life abroad with both the parents racing against time to make money leaving children locked within four walls ? When they return, tossing a few notes in their hands and sending the children to the malls to have fun while both parents having some quiet intimate time at home ?

A recent hangama about a five-year-old reported to the police by FedEx employee isn't forgotten yet. A nurse in UK living away from family to earn money would have been alive if she was with her family.

Please don't come out with reasoning. We in India are better off with less income but our children are happy together and loving just as we parents are towards them.

    Sir and Madam,
I don't personally agree "Richness is God's gift" Look only business people are rich. NO BUSINESS MAN IS HONEST IN THIS WORLD. To sight one simple example all beef exporters are HINDUS. And by mistake someone became rich by God's gift, they will never leave their country because they earned their wealth with honesty. but this is may be 1 person out of 1000.
