Mangalore, Aug 1: CPI (M) will picket Mangalore City Corporation office on Monday August 4 from 10 am onwards, in protest against the corporation's move to hike water tariff. CPI (M) has been demanding for the rolling back of the hike with immediate affect.

Addressing the media in the city on Thursday July 31, CPI (M) city unit secretary Sunil Kumar Bajal said, that the mayor had claimed in June this year that the water tariff has been reduced. However from the bills issued after his statement, it transpires that water tariff has been hiked by about 100%, he said. He demanded for the immediate withdrawal of the increased tariff and application of water rates as existing in September 2007.

Bajal also wanted the duty of reading the meters to be taken away from private contractors and entrusted to the corporation employees again. He alleged that the bills now being issued are prone to lot of errors. Corporator Jayanti Shetty and CPI (M) member Suresh Bajal were present.
