Mangalore: 'Munnabhai' Style Protest to Oppose MSEZ

The Hindu

MANGALORE, Jul 23: Activists who oppose the setting up of the Mangalore Special Economic Zone, adopted the "Munnabhai" style of protest here on Tuesday to register their disapproval against the acquisition of "fertile" lands for the project.

The Karnataka Janabhivrudhi Vedike, the Krishi Bhoomi Samrakshana Samiti and other organisations representing people form Bajpe, Permade, Kalavar and Tenka Ekkar, offered fruits, coconuts, flowers, and medicinal plants such as the "Tulsi" as a mark of protest.

Their representatives said officials were trying to violate stipulations laid down by the Government which had proscribed acquisition of fertile lands. In the absence of Special Land Acquisition Officer Prabhulinga Kavalkatti, the activists gave the "gifts" to a junior officer and requested him to place them on the former's table. They also gave the official greeting cards and placed placards on his table urging a change in heart. They also gave photographs of standing crops on the lands allegedly declared barren.

Dear Ranjith , You should get your facts right. You should think hundred times before supporting a project like MSEZ. If you come and meet the farmers in Permude, Yekkaru etc you will know why they are opposing land acquisition. It is not the farmers who have vested interest, it is the people behind MSEZ who wants to gobble up all the land in the district.

They might fool you by saying you'll get employed. Before believing them find out how much jobs Petrochemical sector creates and what kind of jobs. and also find out how many jobs MRPL has created. And find out how many people MSEZ has recruited till now and from which state? Please don't condemn the protesters till you find out why farmers across India are protesting against SEZ

We students should think twise before opposing SEZ.Please see that the people who are opposing this project are not with good intention. They are not the innocent farmers, but one who have secured jobs elsewhere and those whose children are well settled. Why no one is talking about the uncultivated fields in DK district.

There are a lot of uncultivated farm land in this district, people have stopped growing paddy because of non availability of labours etc.Controlled growth of industries only can fetch jobs to us.Meanwhile the farming/agriculture sector also should grow. When a government wants to build check dams for irrigation water purpose also this so called NGOs fight against them. There are many who want to make money by the way of protest.

Not only people are angry on establishment of MSEZ but the nature is also supporting the people. Because of scarce rain this year people may not get water to drink. If God is in our side then there is no fear.

Its very good to have special economic zone,am sure it will put mlore on map in terms of trade/buisness is concernd and help to generate good revenue which can be used for further developments.(one example is bajpe airport). But at the same time care should be taken to compensiate the people loosing land and to maintain ecological balance for the lost envirnoment.(Vanamahostava)

Sad part is people are fighting against MSEZ but it is coming up without any hurdles because of "Big Guys".Innocent farmers have lost their fertile land falling prey to this mafia.Similarly, Nagarjuna and other industries in Udupi. On one side we demand Green Earth and on the other, deforestation taking place in the name of Development

Very good. Keep united whatever the MSEZ people do to break your unity. They may offer some of you something. But do not fall prey. All the best in your new style of protest. We are with you.
