Bantwal: Gang Vandalizes Property, Assaults Three of Family

Daijiworld Media Network - Bantwal (SP)

Bantwal, Jul 21: A gang comprising of 50 youngsters forcibly entered the house belonging to a Christian family in Atikarabail in Vittal Mudnoor village near here at midnight on Sunday July 20 and assaulted and injured three inmates of the house.

The family’s reluctance to part with additional land for the road is said to be the reason for the attack. In a complaint filed with the police, some of the assaulters have been named as Chandrashekhar, Ganesh Shetty, Dayanand Shetty, Anil Shetty, Prabhakar Shetty, Krishna Nalike, Vithal Poojary and Diwakar Shetty. Cyril Veigas, wife Mabel Veigas and son Sunil Veigas bore the brunt of the gang's fury, as the gang members armed with lethal weapons hit them with vengeance, injuring them badly. It is said that when the injured tried to get out of the house for treatment, the gang members pelted stones at them, forcing them to be confined to their house. The gang members are also said to have blocked the policemen from coming to the family's rescue.

Mabel Veigas has sustained grievous injuries and is being treated at a private hospital in Vittal. The gang is also said to have destroyed a wire fencing the family had erected around its property, inflicting losses to the tune of Rs 15,000.

When a public road was laid about three years ago, Cyril Veigas had given away his land for the purpose and also had put in efforts towards constructing a minor bridge on the road. Mabel Veigas had participated in 'Janata Darshan' mass contact programme of the then chief minister Kumaraswami and played an important role in getting grant for the said minor bridge.

The family erected fencing for its remaining property, but some local persons asked the family to give up more land for the road. The family was not agreeable for this demand. When Cyril Veigas was erecting the fence in the afternoon on Saturday July 19, the gram panchayat president had expressed his displeasure. A complaint was also filed at the police station against this activity.

My suggestion to this affected family is to approach a seasoned lawyer( similar to Mr. Ram Jethmalani) & file a petition in criminal court. This is an attempt to finish a lady & her family during night with a group of 50 goondas.Llady is attacked on head/skull.skull is injured with blood. Lady( mrs.mabel) & other family members should submit neccessary medical reports to the court through lawyer. Attacking a lady with weapons is a serious offence( that to by a man ). Laws are very much in favour to women if you pursue with enough proof. court will send arrest warrant to arresting authority & punish

Let's not talk about minority or majority issue. Surely the people who attacked are in a minority. No sane person will support such people. They are cowardly because 1) that they attacked at midnight and not during the daylight. 2)They needed 50 people to attack 3 people.(they are all youngsters!) 3) They are now hiding. What is difficult for me to digest is that the gang blocked the policemen from coming to the rescue of the family.

If this is true, then the policemen have no moral right to continue to be policemen. They should be suspended immediately so that proper enquiry can be held and guilty (including the policemen) are punished. In spite of the above incident, our state is still BUDDIWANTARA NAADU. Majority of the people, irrespective of their religion are still wise to differentiate between justice and injustice, truth and untruth. I pray for the speady recovery of the Veigas family.

May God give them the strength to stand for the truth and continue to live peacefully in the neighbourhood.

I read Robin and Mohammad Razak comments. As we all know what is happening in Mangaloe. People are showing their weakness and restlessness in a agressive and violent way. No one has the right to take the law in their hands and be violent. In other way, if the road is required for the betterment for the village and Mr Veigas has excess land, then agreement can be reached paying the above market rate to Veigas and settle it. It is shame that people are attacking minor community and the cause or the end result...we all know what is happening now in Bangalorea and Ahmedabad. How long it will be going to continue. We are educated !!

We the Christians are known for our proverbial patience and practice of non-violence! How is that those who swear by the Mahatma resort to violence and bloodshed? Shame on those raging beasts! Let them know that our meekness is not weakness! Congratulations to Daijiworld for mobilising a just cause.

I really support Mr Mohammad H M Bantwal statement that these fellows are the real terriorist. Shame to the police personnel who always act as their politicians direct them. If you police people cannot give protection to the family or if you canot catch hold of the culprits then why are you for. Better get lost and do some other job.

Shame to the 50 people who came to attact just 3 innocent household people who had every right to defend their household property. Let the miscreants attact their own mother father sisters brothers if they have no other work. i really hate this act and all the people guilty should be brought to public and stoned so that such acts are not repeated in future.

I am ashamed of the remarks of Robin D'Souza. He perhaps thinks he is the only wise person to think that "the Veigas family must have created a big problem in the village" These adhika prasangis like Robin D'Souza should have been attacked and then he would have known what it is to suffer at the hands of these hooligans.

Shameful act what they did, how come police is not taking any action against those people? This is kind of act should not be tolerated.  People should come out for the support this family. Today this family tomorrow another family will suffer coz of some Rowdy type of people. I believe they must have political support. This is not good trend at all.

Nobody can force anyone by taking the law into their hands. It is so unfortunate that Veigas family attacked for not providing more space to the road. But physical attack on family is not a good sign of democracy. Nobody dare to ask politicians about their accountability. There is no meaning in attacking a person already sacrified his land to the road. Local admininstration should take strict action against the culprit.

What a shame. 50 goondas entering the house and attacking 3 members of the family. They have not even spared even the housewife. If the same should have done to their mothers, sisters, wives or daughters by others, how these goondas reacted? Might be even they would have called their are Bandh also.

What Mr. Veigas has contributed to the road is his own goodness. But to participate in the so called recognition party like 'Janata Darshan' of the politician is like giving your own neck to the butchers to slit your throat.

It is easier to fight or detach property forcefuly of others is completely wrong. why can't these attackers contribute their property for road, downtrodden or people who does not have shelter? It is easy to talk about others rather to practise. My suggestion is do not fall prey to these type of political publicity.
