Ranchi: Man Sets Wife on Fire after Fifth Girl's Birth

IANS

RANCHI, Jul 9: A man in Jharkhand set his wife on fire after she gave birth to their fifth daughter, police said Wednesday.

According to police, Sarita Devi, 35, a resident of Shakkarpur village, on the outskirts of Jharkhand's capital Ranchi, gave birth to a girl, their fifth consecutive daughter, seven days ago. The birth of five girls in a row within a span of seven years infuriated Sarita's husband, Ketan Khalko.

Khalko arrived home on Tuesday in an inebriated condition. He had a quarrel with Sarita on the baby girl issue.

He poured kerosene on Sarita and set her on fire. Her cries alerted the neighbours, who took her to Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) in Ranchi. Khalko escaped from the spot.

According to doctors, Sarita's condition is serious as she has suffered over 55 percent burn injuries.

"Sarita had already four daughters and the birth of the fifth baby girl infuriated Khalko, who wanted a boy. As my daughter gave birth to a girl, Khalko tried to kill her," said Sarita's mother, Bando Kachchap

I agree with you Mr. Shahnawaz. The Government as an agenda of educating rural people must emphasise on this issue. Why are we treating ''girl babies''as enemies or curse?

Very sad and unfortunate for Sarita and kids. What an ignorance. Why the Govt of India, does not educate village and illiterate couple to this basic knowledge that it the X or Y chromosomes in a man's sperms that decides the sex of the baby and the woman always carries only y chromosome. By doing so at least innocent lives can be saved and man is made to believe in the destiny and wisdom of nature.

Pray God that Sarita survives. Her daughters will be needing at least a mother in their lives. Ketan Khalko should have set himself on fire too as he is equally responsible for the existence of these five girls - or did he think that his wife plucked them from trees?
