Udupi, Jul 6: The lethargic attitude of the Kundapur town municipality administration has caused the lapse of a grant of Rs 1.48 crore under the ADB scheme, earmarked for the installation of a recycling plant for solid wastes in the region.

As a result, the dumping yard in the village of Kandavara continues to be an eyesore and a veritable source of environment pollution. Solid waste has been dumped in two big ponds near the Sangam river and this has been going on for several years now.

Following the villagers objection, the then deputy commissioner Ponnuraju had assured that solid waste would be transported to the well-equipped dumping yard in Karwar. Also, the local panchayat had obtained a stay from the high court against the dumping activities of Kundapur municipality.

Today, the continued apathy on part of the concerned officials has resulted in a golden opportunity slipping away unutilized.
