Kundapur, Jul 5: The body of the deceased 'Naga Patri' and self-proclaimed sorcerer Subraya Achari (39), recovered from a well from a village near here, has been handed over to his kin.

In a private complaint filed in the local court through her counsel Ravikiran Murdeshwar, mother of Subraya Achari has accused four policemen of Sorab police station of being responsible for Achari's death. She says, the policemen tortured him before pushing him into a well.

Judge K G Chinta, acting on the complaint, has forwarded the same to Shankarnarayana police station with instructions to investigate the incident and submit a report thereon. It may be recalled, that Subray Achari, a carpenter by profession, had been, for the last three years, claiming that he is a 'Naga Patri' having divine powers and knowing witchcraft. He used to conduct various religious rituals to get rid of spirits reportedly bothering people and to set right family problems. A divorce petition filed by himself and his wife of four years Savita friom Katbelthur near here, is pending in court.

The police had said that they were on the look out for Achari, after parents of a girl named Aparna from near Sorab complained to them that their married girl had been abducted by Achari through a clandestine operation. They claimed Achari jumped into a well in a bid to escape arrest.

Meanwhile, a policeman from Sorab police station, who had jumped into the well reportedly to save Subraya Achari, is recuperating in a private hospital here.
