M'lore: Unity Hospital Achieves a Rare Feat in Bone Cancer Treatment

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangalore (SP)

Mangalore, Jul 3: The city-based Unity Hospital conducted recently, a breakthrough surgery, first-of-its-kind in city. Dr Jalaluddin Akbar K C, senior and renowned cancer specialist, Dr M V Jalaluddin,  senior orthopaedic surgeon and head of the department of Orthopaedics, Dr Ahmed Rizwan (Orthopaedic surgeon) and Dr Suresh Bhat (Anaesthetist) conducted the surgery on a young boy aged 19 years, suffering from cancer of the right thigh bone (Femur Bone),for which surgery was performed on  June 12 (Limb Salvage in Malignant Bone Tumour).

The bone Tumour with part of thigh bone and knee joint was removed successfully and replaced by artificially created metal bone and joint, thereby saving his leg and his life.

The cases involving bone cancer like this, are routinely treated by cutting-off the whole leg to save the life of the patient. But doctors at the Unity Hospital have been able not only to save the life but also the limb of the 19-year-old boy. This surgery is being performed for the first time in this region. Similar surgeries are performed in a few major centres in metropolitan cities like Mumbai, Chennai etc. But they are very expensive and difficult to access.

At Unity Hospital all major cancer surgeries are being conducted by Dr Jalaluddin Akbar, who is a highly trained cancer specialist. As such, patients are spared from the need to spend heavily in going off to far off cities in search of treatments.

The orthopaedic department of Unity Health Complex headed by Dr Jalaluddin M V and the surgical oncology department headed by DrJalaluddin Akbar have jointly developed a centre in Unity Health Complex to treat all complicated cases of bone cancer.
