MANGALORE, Jun 22: A person assaulted by his friend in a drunken brawl died on account of severe injury at a private hospital here on Saturday. The Mangalore Rural (Kankanady) police who registered a case said the accused Yuvaraj, a resident of Kodekal at Kannur near here, allegedly assaulted Jeethu (24), a bus conductor by profession, with a wooden plank after the latter reportedly hit him over some minor disagreement.

Mangalore Rural Circle Police Inspector Jayanth V. Shetty who is investigating the case said Yuvaraj fled the scene even as Jeethu, fell unconscious on the spot. The local people took Jeethu to the hospital where he was declared dead. The police, who initially registered cases under Section 307 (attempt to murder) and Section 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons) of the Indian Penal Code have changed it into a case of murder.

Mr. Shetty said the accused, who sustained some injuries during the brawl, was admitted to another private hospital.
