Mangalore, Jun 18: Msgr Fred Pereira, former vicar general of Mangalore diocese, was given a rousing welcome on his arrival at St Joseph’s Engineering College, Vamanjoor, on Monday June 16. Director Fr Valerian D’Souza and the assistant director Fr Henry Mascarenhas garlanded him as he stepped out of the lead car followed by other vehicles that also brought to the campus a large number of inmates of St Anthony’s Ashram, Jeppu, where Fr Fred served as director for some time.

Welcoming him formally at a function attended by all the staff and many students, the director Fr Valerian D’Souza recalled the long and happy association of Fr Fred with the College right from the beginning.  In fact he noted that it was Fr Fred who, as convener of the committee to start the College, had worked day and night to see that all the preparations were done properly and under his guidance.

As campus pastor, his presence will be of immense value to the students.

After vote of thanks by the principal, Dr Joseph Gonsalves, everyone was served with refreshments.  Present on the occasion were his brother and sister, who made it to the occasion in spite of age and poor health.  Also present was Msgr Alexander D’Souza, the past Vicar General Msgr Pereira who attended the occasion despite failing health.
