Mangalore, Jun 10: The city corporation officials razed to the ground six unauthorised petty shops and a firewood depot located near the Alake bridge here on Monday June 10.

Praveenchandra Karkera, assistant revenue officer of the corporation who led the operation, said that these structures are being removed as they are unauthorised and stand on corporation land. Notices were served to the concerned by giving time till Saturday June 7 for shifting their belongings, he stated.

The petty shop keepers shifted their belongings just before the demolition drive began. After the corporation officials started shifting the firewood stocks in trucks, those running the shop came up with an offer to shift the firewood on their own.

After a couple of BJP councillors came on the spot and pleaded with the officials, they relented and allowed the depot owners to shift the stocks on their own. The officials said the materials seized by them will be released after the concerned pay up fine.
