Udupi, Jun 6: About 5 electric poles were damaged when a century old tree collapsed at Mallar Kudtimar, near here on Thursday June 5.

Sources said that this was one of the oldest trees which existed in this area. The tree was surrounded by ‘Naga Bana,’ which was worshipped by both Hindus and Muslims alike. Hence, it was considered holy for the locals.

Sources said that the collapsed tree damaged power lines including electric poles.  Meanwhile, electricity supply to Mallar area was affected for hours in this incident.  The personnel from local unit of state owned public utility provider had tough time to restore the energy supply by chopping off the branches of banyan tree and replacing the broken electric poles.
