Mangalore, May 29: Locals at Kulur staged a protest against National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) on Thursday May 29 opposing the delay completing road-widening work being undertaken between Suratkal and B C Road and for not adopting scientific methods in the work.

Members of Rashtriya Heddari Ulisi Horata Samiti, which had organized a similar protest earlier were also present.

Speaking on this occasion, Dinesh Hegde Ulepadi, president of the Samiti, said that the NHAI authorities are not paying respect to the locals who have been victims of the delay in the completing the works. If they do not give due attention to the demands of the public, the protest will be continued further, he warned.

District commissioner M Maheshwar Rao agreed to form a citizens’ committee to solve the problems arisen owing to road-widening works and to speed up the work. Following the DC's assurance, the Samiti decided to withdraw the series of protests it had planned in the next few days.

However, if the problems are not solved, the Samiti will decide on the future course of action, Ulepadi added.

Fr Gerald Pinto, parish priest of Kulur church, Subhaschandra Shetty, secretary of the Samiti and others were present at the protest. Interestingly, women of Kulur participated in this protest in large numbers.
