Mangalore: Dept Receives Rs 4 Lac for Non-existing Hostel!

DHNS

Mangalore May 1: In an interesting development, the Directorate of Disabled Welfare Department in Bangalore has identified an NGO Mahathma Gandhi Education Society in Dakshina Kannada district, to run the hostel for the physically challenged.

However, reliable sources in the district administration told Deccan Herald that such an NGO does not exist in the district nor any society by that name has been registered in Dakshina Kannada district.

It is also learnt that the District Disabled Welfare Department has received a cheque for Rs 4 lakh in the name of Mahathma Gandhi Education Society. Ironically, the Department too is searching the hostel in the district to make the payment.

Meanwhile, when contacted District Disabled Welfare Officer B P Puttaswamy said that the hostel was located in Balmatta in November. “At present, it is said to be situated somewhere in Valencia,” he said and added that he and the deputy director will search the hostel before taking any further step.

It may be recalled that the department had called for applications asking the disabled to avail the facility for the disabled recently.
