Man assaulted by 'cow vigilantes' in Nagpur was carrying beef: Police

Nagpur, Jul 16 (PTI): The Muslim man with links to the BJP who was thrashed by alleged cow vigilantes in Maharashtra's Nagpur district four days ago was carrying beef, police have said.

The police had arrested four persons for brutally thrashing Salim Shaha (34), a member of the BJP's Katol unit, on July 12 and sent the meat he was carrying to a forensic laboratory.

The lab report was "positive", i.e. it was beef, Superintendent of Police (Nagpur rural) Shailesh Balkawde told PTI yesterday.

Police will initiate further action against Shaha in accordance with the law, he said.

Meanwhile, the Nagpur (rural) unit president of the BJP, Rajiv Potdar, expressed shock at the findings.

It was shocking that Shaha has been found to be carrying beef that day, Potdar said, adding he would be dismissed from the party.

Stern action should be taken against him according to the law, but people must not take law in their own hands and resort to violence in such cases, Potdar said.

Shaha's mother had claimed that he was the head of the BJP's Katol tehsil minority morcha, while local BJP leaders said he was a party member.

The incident of thrashing had drawn strong condemnation from the ruling BJP's coalition partner Shiv Sena, besides the opposition Congress and NCP.

However, the BJP had sought to play it down, calling it a "stray" incident.

Shaha, the resident of Katol town in Nagpur district, was returning home on his motorcycle when five-six men accosted him at a bus stop on July 12 in Bharsingi village on suspicion that he was carrying beef and assaulted him.

Four men - Ashwin Uike (35), Rameshwar Taywade (42), Moreshwar Tandurkar (36) and Jagdish Chaudhari (25) - were subsequently arrested and booked under IPC section 326, pertaining to voluntarily causing grievous hurt.

Selling and eating beef within Indian territory is not banned as per Indian constitution. It's only executive orders of the party who rules that state to invoke or revoke this order as long as the party lasts in that state. SC will have final say in this matter. Period.

How did these goons come to know that Shaha was carrying beef???. Did the police or these goons find out the source from where he got beef that would have been proof enough than sending the sample to forensic test????. Surprisingly police were in all hurry and co-operating extremely well to get the meat checked at the forensic lab?!?!?, Looks Like well planned drama by the victim, aggressors, protectors of law and the servants of the people. It's only possible by showbazi party like BJP to ullu banaoing.

Eating, sleeping, waking, walking, sitting, standing, riding, driving and so and so forth-all these are to be amended by law. Scanners are to be installed in highway's, byway's and everywhere. For monitoring these, manpower is required. Good opportunity for creating plenty of jobs...

They were carrying beef. So what?
Who gave the permissions to those rogues to assault them? Police, instead of checking the reason for assault, should treat assault as a crime and book those rowdies.
Let the man be then booked for carrying beef as per law, that is secondary.

The ban on beef is a state sponsored tool that has been used by Hindu right groups. If a human is harmed or killed as the reason of some idiotic laws passed by the govt then the laws makers who pass such laws should be prosecuted.

When an Indian is attacked in western democracies, there is a huge uproar in our country about racism faced by the people of Indian origin over there. But what about people being targeted and killed in our own country??? This fake showing of concern about human life shown by us Indians is pathetic.

    Vinayak Prabhu,

Tomorrow... if a particular food that you eat is suddenly made illegal to consume what would you do???
Cow slaughter ban is an agenda concocted by the govt to target a specific section of our society. It has nothing to do with a cow being holy.

    Mr. Prabhu,

You are absolutely correct in observing that in Maha, cattle slaughter is prohibited. But supply of meat from neighboring states is not prohibited. Then, for what is this supply ? To cater to those who eat beef - right ? If local residents don't carry beef with them, how do you expect the meat to reach their home ? By drones ?

How come you pronounced jail to the person carried it as per legal permission, why did you not have the same verdict for those who broke the law and manhandled him ?

Vinayak, he is a BJP member should be exempted from all crimes. Oh sorry, forgot his name is Salim Shaha. He should be punished isn't it ? However, four persons, the true soldiers of cow who bravely attacked single person should be awarded highest bravery award of India.
