Mahajan convenes all-party meet ahead of monsoon session

New Delhi, July 14 (IANS): Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has convened an all-party meeting on Sunday, a day before Parliament's monsoon session begins.

The meeting with leaders of various parties in the Lok Sabha will take place in Parliament's Library Building, the Lok Sabha Secretariat said.

Mahajan will seek cooperation from all political parties for a smooth functioning of the lower house during the customary meeting ahead of the monsoon session scheduled to end on August 11.

Opposition parties are all set to corner the government over issues related to India's border stand-off with China, the Kashmir situation, farmers' distress and Goods and Services Tax among others.

Both houses of Parliament are unlikely to transact any business on the first day (July 17) on account of the death of two MPs - Vinod Khanna (Lok Sabha) and P. Goverdhan Reddy (Rajya Sabha).

On the same day, voting to elect the new President is scheduled in which 776 MPs are eligible to vote.

Vinod Khanna, who represented Gurdaspur in Punjab, died on April 27. Reddy, the Rajya Sabha member of the Congress from Telangana, died on June 9.
