Mangalore, Apr 14: In a bizarre incident two children of a family died of falling into an open water tank near Kana at Suratkal here on Sunday April 13 evening.

Arafat (4), son of Ashraf of Kana and Ashraf's niece Shahjin (6) are the two ill-fated ones who died a tragic death.  The incident occured on Sunday evening when both of them were playing near their grandfather Hammabba's house at Kana.

Arafat and Shahjin had come to their grandfather's house to spend their holidays.  On Sunday while playing their reached near an open water tank near an under-construction building.  The tank was constructed at the ground level to supply water for the under-construction building.  Though the neighbours had repeatedly asked the contractor either to close or at least cover the tank, he had not heeded.

Both the children fell in the tank and were stuck in the deep muck which was inside the tank.  The incident did not come to the notice of the family members initially.  It was only a little while later that one of the family members who went to look out for both the children, found them drowned in the tank.

Arafat's father Ashraf is working abroad.  Shahjin was Ashraf's sister's daughter.  While Arafat was an LKG student in a Kana-based school, Shahjin was a UKG student.

Suratkal police have registered a case in this regard.

Incident reflects the depth of failure of safety measures in construction sites. An unforgivable negligence. I can solace the bereaved faimy: - "And obey Allah & His Prophet & do not dispute with one another least you lose courage & your strength depart & be patient. Surenly Allh is with those who the patient one" - (Ho ly Quran 8:46)

I am really shocked hear this news. Now who is responsible for this accident? Such negligence by the contractor has proved lethal to two little lives. Nobody can fulfill the loss of these two little lives to their family but strict action should be taken against the contractor.
