Several factors responsible for decline in GDP growth: Jaitley

New Delhi, Jun 1 (PTI): Several factors including the global situation were responsible for decline in GDP growth to 6.1 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2016-17, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said today, dismissing suggestions that it was on account of demonetisation.

The minister further said some slowdown was visible even prior to demonetisation of Rs 500/1000 currency notes announced by the government on November 8 last year.

"Seven-eight per cent growth is fairly reasonable level of growth and very good by global standard and reasonable by Indian standard," Jaitley said while addressing media on completion of three years of the Modi government.

According to GDP data released yesterday, growth rate slipped to 6.1 per cent in the January-March quarter and 7.1 per cent, the lowest in the three years, during 2016-17.

Referring to the challenges, he said the major ones include resolving the issue of bad loans in the banking sector and encouraging private sector investment.

On privatisation of ailing national carrier Air India, Jaitley said Niti Aayog has already given its recommendations to the Civil Aviation Ministry to explore various options.

"It is for the Civil Aviation Ministry to explore various options," he added.

Why heigher figure was not given by cooking up .... Any how , who is going to verify ... even the declared figure may be on heigher side..... every action has equal and opposite reaction .... May be Karma of note bandi .... instead of note bandi, the govt should have resorted to Income tax raids on black money holders --political leaders / businessmen instead of giving trouble to common man ....

Now government is collecting 10 times revenue than 2014 ... in excise duty, sales tax , Vat and in other taxes ,
Where the money is going.. .. there is not any devalopment project this government is undertaken .... This BJP government major project is ..... Swacha bharat by Broom, Cow protection, Beef ban, thats all..

Mohan Sr....I fully agree with your assessment. I voted BJP thinking they believe in progress, democracy and uplift of people power. Unfortunately, I was totally wrong. The current GDP of 6.1 is also erroneous as they have fudged even the way they calculate GDP. If they use the same yardstick as the previous government, then, the GDP is close to 5.1-5.2. So, this clearly shows the progress. Congress in opposition is nothing but a disgrace. Most of the policies adopted to date are backward and not progressive. India is slowly becoming a laughing stock.

Mr. Swamy, these thugs could not measure and manage the economy so all these are excuses now. Also now they are playing with cow and cowsheds eyeing one more victory in 2019 General Elections not on their performance but based on cow sympathy. They have already planned this.

Modi govt is full of fakenomics and there are thousands of BJP supporters who back them without any thoughts. Who is going to suffer it is fellow Indian. BJP is least concerned about them. Only objective is to put BJP ahead of India and fellow country men. That is a shame.

Demonetization is one of the factor certainly, that is pushed the economy down. But, apart from that there are hundreds of other issues. There are millions of job losses because of faulty policies. Judiciary is politicized, judgments started coming based on religious ideology. Corrupt politicians within BJP are in the statehood of sainthood.

The problem with Modi and BJP govt., is honest people have to prove their honesty, whether they are walking around, food they are eating, talk they are talking and comments they are making and so on.

Jetley Saab, You cannot bury the truth that the demonitisation caused the slowdown and now the decline in the GDP. Black Money is back to square one. Corruption is thriving. Where is the Lokpal Bill. Why no notification for a Lokpal. What about unemployment. There is allround uncertainity in the country.
