Mangalore: Officials Inspect Areas Affected by Oil leakage

Mangalore, Apr 5: On receiving complaints from local residents that their agricultural land was affected due to oil leakage, assistant commissioner Shameer Shukla and MRPL officials recently visited Atturkodi, Suratkal near here where the oil leakage occurred.

Two local residents, Lilly D'Souza and William D'Souza had complained to DC court that  their agricultural land was affected badly  due to oil leakage. The deputy commissioner formed a committee which included Shameer Shukla to conduct spot inspection of the affected areas. When Shukla reached the area the D'Souza family complained to MRPL officials that drinking water pond was also contaminated due to oil leakage. They said  that they are not getting sufficient drinking water.

Further they informed the MRPL officials that areca nut and coconut plantations also were affected due to the leakage. MRPL officials assured that drinking water will be supplied through tankers. The residents demanded water for agriculture also.

The assistant commissioner collected water for testing in the lab. P P Shenoy (environment general manager), Y B Salian, MRPL manager (administration) and other officials were also present.

    More than providing water to D'Souza families it is the legal responsibility of MRPL to see how & why this kind of leakage taken place in a company who is commited for environmental execellenec & prevetion of pollution. MRPL should take this public complaint seriously to prevent such environmental incident.
