Today's meeting a start to rallying opposition against Modi: Hariprasad

Kolkata, May 27 (IANS): Terming Congress chief Sonia Gandhi's luncheon meeting with leaders of 17 opposition parties in Delhi "just a beginning", party General Secretary B.K. Hariprasad on Friday said the party would make all efforts to bring together political forces for a united fight against the Narendra Modi government ahead of the 2019 general elections.

"We will try to bring all opposition forces together before the 2019 elections and put up a united fight against Modi government," Hariprasad told media persons here.

In this context, he said Friday's opposition parleys at Parliament House "is just a beginning".

Attacking the BJP and the Sangh Parivar, he said the communal forces were trying to divide the country.

He however refused to reply to a query regarding strong misgivings in the Congress in Bengal about West Bengal Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee's meeting with Gandhi.

Hariprasad also deftly parried a poser on whether the Trinamool would form a part of an extensive opposition grouping in the near future.

"The Congress Working Committee is empowered to decide on such matters. For now, we are concerned with evolving a common strategy for the presidential polls."
